J M SECTION 2-PAGE A-Fl^iNDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MAY 3«. I#-" Lions report successful eye donor drive Lions Club members have concluded one of the most successful eye donor pledge drives in recent years obtaining a total of 2,566 pledges to help supply tissue vitally needed for corneal transplants. According to Roger Brunner, of Oregon, chairman of the state coordinating committee on the Eye Donor Registry, which coordinates the dirve for the Lions of Illinois Foundation, the campaign was part of a statewide effort of 30,000 Lions in more than 700 communities as part of the Eye Donor Registry program. The registry is an activity of the Lions of Illinois Foundation, the charitable arm of the state's nearly 700 Lions Clubs. To date, said Brunner, more than 25,000 pledges have been received. Under terms of the Eye Donor Pledge Drive, the donor agrees to pledge his or her eyes to the registry. The registry obtains and transports tissue to the eye banks where it is used for cor neal transplants. Said Brunner, "At any given time there are about 400 visually impaired persons in Illinois who are waiting for eye tissue so that transplant surgery can be performed. But there is a shortage of eyes, hence the need to wait on the part of prospective recipients." Pledges can be signed by anyone 18 years of age or older. Not only do Lions accept pledges, they also transport the tissue to participating eye banks. Lions also aid in establishing eye centers in hospitals and mortuaries all over the state. The mechanics of the program are as follows: At the time of the person's death, the eyes are removed by trained surgeons or technicians. Appearance is not changed. Eyes are sent to the several participating eyebanks as soon as possible after death. Because of limitations of time, mentioning the wish to donate eyes or other organs after death in a will does not always work. All eyes are used, no matter the condition, even those donated by persons who wear eyeglasses. They are either used for corneal t r a n s p l a n t s , s u r g i c a l procedures, education or research. Although a pledge card is legally binding, it may be revoked by the signer at anytime during his or her lifetime. The card information, kept confidential, is sorted by the lions of Illinois Foundation. The signer carries a plastic identification card and receives a sticker for a driver's license. Eyes cannot be allocated for use by any specific individual. Corneas are given according to a wainting list. As in all of their programs, Lions charge no fees for the Eye Donor program.
