PAGE 4 - PLA1NDEALER WEDNESDAY, MAY », ISM Adult class series slated on reducing stress, anxiety Among summer's favorite projects, like relaxing in the warm SOD, residents may find that a few boors spent in MOCs new adult education course might help them eqjoy life a little more. Beginning June 5, every Tuesday evening from 7 p.m till 10 pjn. MCC wfll present a course in reducing stress and anxiety through the principles of meditation. The course wiD be taught by Denny Granger of Crystal Lake who has a master's degree in psychology and is currently completing his doc toral dissertation in psychology with an emphasis on techniques of self-regulation. Modern society, with its emphasis on time schedules, performance, and productivity, may induce stress and anxiety to some degree in many people, and a degree of stress may even help them to perform at their optimum level. But when stress and anxiety become a major factor in one's life, the result can be serious deteriorations in performance and sense of well- being and, if unchecked, may even lead to serious physical and psychological problems. The course will give students the opportunity to learn a modern, attentional form of meditation, especially suited to today's busy life-style. This form of meditation is par ticularly useful in reducing For Your Information OMrfrlMdt, Memorial Day weekend holds memories I don't get into the and does not go mystical aspects often found in I l?|f .I .I. • 1 m . .I. During his research, Granger has worked closely with several internationally-known authors and researchers in the areas of meditation and psychology and he wfll offer stress-reduction techniques based on this research along with methods for avoiding stress and an overview of the nature of stress. Each class will consist of a presentation of useful background material, guided practice meditations, and group discussions. In addition, students wfll be given the op portunity to participate in several short tests of their stress levels and other important factors. The tests will allow Granger to tailor the course to the specific needs of the students and wiU also contribute to his ongoing five-year research into the process of meditation. Registration for an summer courses can be completed Monday through Thrusday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m. and on Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m Registration must be made in person at the college campus. CAHSI days, I ha vent heard that old refrain about an early deadline due to a holiday. Nosr comes a call from Betty Smith. Under the McClory calendar. Memorial Day is up fast Monday means get going. The holiday has become known as Decoration Day because of the custom of decorating the graves of ser vicemen and relatives. It's a custom that shows respect In days gone by we heard speakers like Judge Barnes, State's Attorney Lumley and Judge Carroll. All great orators who could make your chest swell with patriotism One pleasant surprise in recent years was when "Brenda" gave the address. I knew she could talk, but dkkit know she could speak. The day usually marked the end of the school year, a time when kids could whoop it up and take off their shoes for the summer. Bands and parades were always a big part of honoring those who had given their lives. Elected office holders mar ched until (I repeat) they kept getting farther and farther back in the line. The year they were lined up in back of the horses marked the beginning of riding in cars. There was always a baseball game. Before golf courses in our area and before TV, those games drew big crowds. In early days, teams hired some players. Betting was heavy. it paid, but found dollar inthefinge glove after the What was he to do but remove the tails. Guess they still are. We had a great time Wed nesday. Ex-editor Adele, Marie Yegge, Alvina and I toured over to Woodstock Country Club to have lunch with Bill and T.i1» Burfeindt. Bill was boss-man at the Plaindealer for many years before moving up the line in the Shaw organization. Those were the days before the big rush of making a living. We had fun. Are those Cubs for real? Add a good starting pitcher and they may make believers out of some of us. See you in September. We were enjoying a program until an automobile salesman came on loud and strong. The A high throw merely lets the runner know he is being wat- cbed- A sharp, low curve still makes the batters look fooHsh- Why can't major .league players learn to bunt?- If pitching isnt 80 percent of the game, make it §0 percent- Batters with .200 batting average couldn't carry the bats of players in the pre-erpanskm day- Little shortstops have arms Ban outfielders twice their size- Imagine how a leadoff man feds after sliding headfirst with a triple, then standing there while the next three batters fail to get him home- I don't umpires win or lose many games, but replays *ow they goof on some calls- It seems stupid when out fielders collide when chasing a fly ball- Can't they hotter?-- Still if you can't hit a pitcher, bunt him to death- Why not swing at the first pitch when it's right down the pflce?- You won't get another one that good- Most managers doot get out the hook fast enough when the rest of us know the pitcher is all through- Why don't managers ask me?
