Eligible residents informed of government commodities PAGE II - PLAINDE ALER - FRIDAY, JUNE 1 , 1S34 Volunteers needed for wildlife project Government commodities are being distributed by 20 food pantries and organizations in McHenry County to families that qualify under federal in­ come Guidelines. Commodities this month in­ clude processed cheese, cheddar cheese, dry milk, flour and corn meal. „• Distribution is for residents of McHenry County whose family income is below the following monthly guidelines: One in household, $488; two, $648; three, $803; four, $969; five, $1,129; six, $1,290; seven, $1,450; eight, $1,610; for each additional family member add $129. In­ come includes all sources, such as Social Security, unem­ ployment compensation, in­ terest, dividends, and wages. Each person who receives the commodities signs a card stating that his income is within Non-profit groups invited to participate in recycling The McHenry County Defenders conducts recycling drives throughout the county. In the McHenry area, the drive is held on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The next drive will be Saturday, June 2. The drives are conducted in the parking lot of McHenry Community High School West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Hd., McHenry. Non-profit community groups often co-sponsor the drives and share in the proceeds. In­ terested groups should contact a Defender representative at 385- 8512. Recyclable materials include any of the following items: newspaper with no junk mail or magazines included, glass containers with all metal and plastic removed, "tin" cans which jiave been rinsed and flattened, usecl motor oil, and aluminum scrap of all kinds. The Defenders buy 100 percent aluminum cans for 31 cents per pound ft crushed, and 29 cents per pound if uncrushed. A bonus is paid for lots of more than 100 pounds. Another recycling opportunity is available on the second Thursday of each month, Thursday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. At this drive only aluminum cans and glass containers are accepted. The usual price is paid for aluminum cans and a penny a pound is paid for glass containers. The drive is conducted in the area behind McHenry Farm Services, 4004 W. Elm. St. Entrance should be made via Borden Street. income guidlines. Church Women United Clothing Closet serves as distribution center for the county and distributes to food pantries and organizations which distribute in their own communities. The amount of commodities to each area is based on the population and unemployment levels of the area. Unem­ ployment has ben high in McHenry County and churches have been collecting canned goods and other food items for pantries, to give away food when need is established. Persons should call the above listed telephone nummbers for their own town's pantry location. The Woodstock Pantry is now located at 112 Grove St. (former Clay Street School) at the same location as CWU's Clothing Closet. i Emergency foods are distributed by the pantry. They are open Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. During the summer months, hundreds of orphaned and in­ jured birds and animals will be brought to the McHenry County Conservation District's Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center for care. Tlie center will also receive thousands of calls from people with questions or problems involving wildlife. Volunteers are needed to assist in the ac­ tivity, Minimum., age for rehabilitation volunteering is 16 years. Volunteers are requested to make a commitment of at least four hours per week on a regularly scheduled basis.
