National Forum for Women names executive director PAGE 9 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, JUNE II The National Forum for Women, located in Woodstock, has announced the selection of their first executive director, Patricia Myles Gilroy of Chicago. Ms. Gilroy, who assumed her post last month will be managing the forum's three million dollar residential con ference center. The center provides an affordable, tranquil rural setting for conferences, seminars, meetings, workshops and retreats. Ms. Gilroy will be expanding the marketing of the center to the business com munity as well as to non-profit organizations. In addition to her duties directly relating to the con ference center, Ms. Gilroy will be implementing programs of the not-for-profit public charity, aimed at developing op portunities for women to ad vance and contribute to society on all levels. Before joining the National Forum for Women Ms. Gilroy, who is a graduate of the University of Missouri, was associate director of the Albert Einstein Peace Prize Foun dation. Prior to that she was a consultant to major food companies in the area of marketing and public relations and served 10 years as director of Home Economics for a major trade association in the food industry. Sister Joel Read, president of Alverno College in Milwaukee, PATRICIA MYLES GILROY who serves as president of the NFW's board of directors, said in making the announcement, "The National Forum for Women is on the verge of assuming an important place in the women's movement. Pat Gflroy is going to play a vital role in our organization's development*" Other members of the NFW's Board of Director's include: -Judy Langford Carter, contributing editor at Redbook magazine, honorary chair of the President's Advisory Com mittee for Women during the Carter administration; and account executive for Janet Diederichs, Inc. -Kathryn Fr Clarenbach, professor of political science and department chair of Women's Educational Resources at the University of Wisconsin. -Judith Drinka, partner in the law firm of Habush, Habush and Davis, Milwaukee. -Irma Gertler, Milwaukee, international president-elect of B'nai B'rith Women and a national commissioner of the Anti-Defamation League. --Sonja T. Front St., McH'enry Safety Hints: Fatigue is a driving hazard By Secretary of State Jim Edgar Fatigue, although not generally considered a problem on short trips, can be a serious traffic safety hazard on long trips such as vacations. Even an hour in the driver's seat can bring on "highway hypnosis," or drowsiness caused by monotony from the sound of the wind, tires on the pavement, and steady hum of the engine. According to the National Safety Council, the typical vacation trip by auto in the United States is 160 miles from start to destination. If you are planning to drive on your vacation this summer, allow plenty of time for unex pected delays and drive a comfortable number of hours or miles each day. Guard against fatigue by stopping at least every two hours for a break. Don't risk an accident by stopping on the shoulder of the highway. LINCOLN'S TOMB Summer visitors to Lincoln's Tomb State Historic Site will be able to witness formal retreat ceremonies performed by a re activated Civil War military unit each Tuesday at 7 p.m. throughout the summer. If you are using medication, check with your doctor to see how it can affect your driving. Some medicines cause drowsiness. Emotional stress can be very fatiguing. If you are irritated by traffic or road conditions or angry with someone, get off the road. Most importantly, don't drink and drive. Alcohol is a depressant. It impairs vision, hearing, judgment, reaction time, awareness and coor dination. Once you have had a few drinks, you may feel less tense and inhibited but, behind the wheel, you will become tired rapidly, especially at night. If you have been drinking, let someone else drive. Remember, driving your car is work. It demands your constant attention. IN MEMORIAM In memory of Duane Winn who passed away June 17,1983. God gave us strength to face it. And courage to bear the blow. But what it meant to lose him No one will ever know. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone. A part of us went with you The day God called you home. Your memory is our keepsake With that we'll never part. God has you in His keeping But we have you in our hearts.
