On Monday evening during the short and snappy little shower one of the shelters at the golf course was blown across the fairways and one of the greens, digging up the green sod. Outbuildings were blown over and cupolas blown from barns. In the storm last week even greater damage was done with silos being blown over, trees down, and in McHenry the barn at the D.I.Granger home was blown down wice Tales Mrs. Fred C. Schoewer of McHenry was elected first vice- president of the McHenry County American Legion Auxiliary at the meeting and annual election of officers held at Crystal Lake, Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. "Happy Jack" Turner were guests at Pinky Harrison's resort on Pistakee Bay over the weekend. Mr. Turner is a well-known radio entertainer over the stations of the National Broadcasting Co. and the patrons of the resort were much pleased to make his personal acquaintance Saturday evening. He greets you with a smile and it is easy to see "thar's fun for them thar eyes." FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 15, 1944.) A decrease in the number of graduates from high schools in the county during 1943 Was noted in a recent survey. The probable reason is that many young men enlisted their ser vices in either the army or navy during the past year, causing the drop in enrollment from 396 to 354 graduates. Another reason is the lure of high wages in war plants causing some pupils to quit their studies to enter the working world. Also, if a student reaches 18 years before completing high school, he may be called to service against his wishes and forced to give up thoughts of graduating with his class. Letters to the editor from servicemen included ones from Robert Winkel in New Guinea, James Sheehan in Italy and Bob Doran in New Guinea. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 14, 1974) Stolen merchandise valued at $4,000 was recovered Sunday morning when Deputy Sheriff James Fitzgerald on routine patrol in Huemann's subdivision north of McHenry, recognized the license plates of an in dividual wanted by the Sheriff's department. While questioning the resident at whose home the car was parked, the deputy noticed a quantity of new ap pliances in one room of the home. The resident admitted to the burglary and was charged. Two men were rescued from McCullom Lake Tuesday evening after their boat cap sized while they were fishing. Michael Wallace of McHenry and Leo Bujak of Winona Lake, Ind., were taken from the water by an unidentified boater who came to their rescue. In attempting to net a fish, the boat capsized and threw both men into the water. There were no injuries.
