Spring Hill Mall Deadline to order stock fish is June 18 The second of three fish sales is being offered «to residents of McHenry County. The purpose of the sales is to assist pond owners, lake associations, sports clubs, park districts; etc., in stocking Jtifeir lakes and ponds. Thcf sale will be con ducted on SundsyrJ|ine 24 at the Woodstock Farm /and Lawn Center in Woodstc Four species of fish will be available including largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid sunfish, and channel catfish. The largemouth bass will be available in either the 1 inch to 3 inch size or the 6 inch to 8 inch size. The 1 inch to 3 inch bass can be stocked into ponds without an existing predator fish population. If the predator fish are already present in the lake, the6inch to 8 inch fish should be stocked, since they will be able to successfully withstand predation. Orders for the larger bass should be placed im mediately, since there are a limited number of fish available. Thus the 6 inch to 8 inch bass will be sold on a "first come-first serve basis". Hybrid sunfish can be ob tained in two different sizes, 1 inch to 3 inches long and 3 inches to 5 inches in length. The hybrid is the result of a cross between a LAWN & GARDEN Clearance: on soil conditioners. Also, hybrid sunfish will not overpopulate a pond, as often happens with bluegill, causing a stunted fish population. Hybrids are a good stocking combination with "trained" largemouth bass and channel catfish, because they will also readily accept aritifical fish food, which will enhance their growth. The amount of natural forage that hybrids will provide for largemouth bass is under question. The stocking rates are 500 fish per acre if artifical fish food is used, and 250 fish per acre if the fish are not fed. Channel catfish can also be purchased in two size categories, 4 inches to 6 inches long and 6 inches to 8 inches long. The channel catfish is not only a popular sport fish, but also is considered a very good food fish. Contrary to what many believe, channel catfish will not "muddy*' a pond as do carp or bullheads. It is a desirable species for stocking because catfish will readily accept artifical fish food. The 4 inch to 6 inch fingerlings should be stocked into ponds without an existing predator fish population, but the larger catfish (6 inches to 8 inches) can be stocked into ponds with existing predator fish. The stocking rates are 200 to 300 fish per acre if artificial food is used, and 100 fish per acre if the fish are not fed. Bluegill will be available in the 1 inch to 3 inch size or the 4 inch to 6 inch size. This species is popular panfish found in most ponds and lakes. They are often stocked into ponds with largemouth bass. Bluegill may spawn two or three times during the season, which contributes to the frequent problem of over population. Adult bluegill feed primarily on small insects, but can easily be trained to accept artifical fish food. Stocking rates for bluegill are between 750 to 1,000 fish per acre. All fish will be bagged with oxygen for safe transfer. The bags will be of a convenient size for easy transportation by car or truck. Delivery and stocking can be arranged for very large orders. Additional assistance regarding stocking rates, species selection, will be available as part of the program. An additional sale, scheduled for late September or early October; will have larger fish available, including "trained" largemouth bass (6 inches to 8 inches long), walleye and muskie. To place an order, or for more information, call Keith Peters at (815) 338-4200. The deadline for accepting orders for the sale will be Monday, June 18.
