He finally found a ball buried under some equipment, and he threw it over to the umpire. "Do you know how much one of these costs?," asked the Wonder Lake Coach. "Each one costs $4.50." All Birdsell could do was hope McHenry wouldn't hit another one out of the park. The area past the fence is all tall weeds and brush, making it just about impossible to retrieve balls after they have been hit Out. At the rate McHenry Nautilus was hitting homeruns, Birdsell would be out of balls by the fifth inning. K McHenry slammed out four homers at Wonder Lake's Christ the King Field en route to a 13-2 win over the hosts. Leading the homerun parade was McHenry's number nine hitter, Brad Snyder. "He has not been doing a lot of hitting," said McHenry coach Russ Williams. "I haven't looked at the statistics yet, but I will bet those are the first two hits of the season for him." Snyder slammed a two-run shot over the leftfield fence in the second inning and a solo shot in the fifth. Mike Podpora and Ross Vehring joined in on the homerun hitting action. Pod- pora's leftfield slam came with the bases loaded in the third inning for a grand slam. Vehring hit a two-run shot over the rightfield fence. All together, McHenry sprayed out 13 hits. "It's easy to win when you get that many hits," Williams said. The only disappointment for Williams was the pitching of Bill Cameron. Cameron started for McHenry and only lasted until the third inning before giving way to Vehring. Cameron was protecting a 7-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the third inning when he walked the next four batters, forcing in one run. Vehring replaced Cameron with an one ball count on Tim Fields. Vehring forced Fields to pop up to end the inning. "We have to get Bill Cameron going," said Williams. "I feel he can pitch. He's just getting a littlf* intimldatad " McHenity took a 1-0 leacl In t& first inning. Lead-off hitter Tim Pankiewicz was walked by Wonder Lake starter Dan Crook. Crystal Lake gives McHenry a free ride result was 15 walks given up in the first inning alone, 34 walks given up all together. The net result was an easy 35-4 win for McHenry in five innings., The ineffectiveness of the Crystal Lake pitchers left McHenry coaches Mary Ann Knaack and Pat Norton very surprised. "This is not a true representee of a Crystal Lake team," said Norton. "I'm happy," added Knaack. "I really felt Crystal Lake would be our tougher competition. The next time around I'm sure they will be tougher." Crystal Lake may be tougher - next time, this time they layed down and died. But Knaack gave of credit to her starting pitcher Missy Gray and the derense. „ "Our defense and pitching was the key in this game," said Knaack. Gray experienced a rough first inning, walking two and giving up three runs. But she settled down the rest of the way, only walking one more batter and only allowing two singles. Gray gave up her first walk to lead-off hitter Amy Erickson. Erickson, however, was cut- down at second base on the steal attempt by McHenry's catcher, Andee Norton. One more out later, Gray walked Jenny Gibson and gave up a single to Laura Jensen. A fielding error by shortstop Nancy Walsh, allowed Tania Brammer to reach and load the bases. Crystal Lake took a 2-0 lead when Deb Ethling slammed a double. Another run scored on a fielding error by second baseman Gretchen Fuaiva. But Fuiava picked up the grounder hit by Cheryl Lenz, throwing to first base for the final out. Brammer, Crystal Lake's starting pitcher, had a rougher time than Gray. After forcing lead-off hitter Patti Johnson to pop up, Nancy Walsh singled and the next seven batters reached on walks. By the time the inning was over, McHenry went through its batting order 2% times and scored 17 runs on only one hit. Walsh, Rennee Mezzano, Delia Saunders, Fuiava, Debbie McFaul, Gerri Haner and Gray all scored twice in the inning. Again, Brammer had control problems in the second inning, giving up six more walks.
