> Organic gardening brings piece of mind SECTION 2 - PAGE S - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27,1984 By Georgette Braun Plaindealer news service • * JSay "strawberry," and any preachooler is likely to say 'fehortcake." And she's not talking the dessert-she's talking about that sweet- anellin' doll. £ut if you ask Jason Gutt, 2, about strawberries, with a little coaxing he probably could tell you more than you wanted to know. LHe helps his mom and dad, Doris and Phillip, grow and pick the juicy strawberries on their farm at 4509 Island Road, Harvard. "About all Joshua (15 months) is good for is eating them and tipping over the containers," Doris says with a laugh. The family sells organically- grown strawberries; about 500 quarts were sold two years ago from a 40-foot-by-40-foot patch. Doris expects their patches, vftiich now also includes four 200-foot rows, to yield between 11500 and 2,000 quarts next year. '"I guess you become especially interested in natural foods when you have little kids (flaying) out in the garden. You don't have to worry about what they're eating," Doris says. "We don't believe we need all those pesticides in our diet." And Doris thinks their Sure Cirop strawberries have a more "concentrated flavor" and are v not as fibrous as some that are treated with chemicals. The berries they are picking now are sfnall to average size and are from plants transplanted in March. Doris says the Senator Dunlap variety is a great strawberry for making jam with. The small patch of plants the family has were gifts from family mem bers. Doris grew up growing the succulent berries. Sometimes it's early June when the Gutts start picking, but this year it was a little later. The Gutts use a matted-row approach to growing. After the area between the rows is has been rototilled and the weeds controlled through the "hands- on" approach, the off-shoot ^babies" of the strawberry plants are "thrown back in" to tjhe ground, Doris says. Tliat way, pie plants cover much of the area between rows and weed-pulling is kept to a minimum. The Gutts hire youngsters to help them harvest their crop. And they welcome any pick-tt- your-selfers, who can do so for 75 cent8 a quart. Already picked strawberries cost $1.25. Nearer the end of the picking season, the Gutts allow young children to help their parents pick in the patches "just so they have the experience." But the Gutts really aren't looking for customers. "We have plenty," Doris says. "I keep trying to tell my friends to grow some," so she can give them customers, Doris says. Phillip says there are about 50 people on a list whose orders have yet to be filled. "We might be able to sell someone a quart or two," Doris says. Last year, Sonya Brook, who sells organic vegetables and plants from her van near Seeley's Synder Drugs on' Ayer Street* sold some of the Gutts' strawberries. "But I don't think we'll have enough this year," Doris says. The Gutts do plan to sell onions and squash at the Far mer's Market in Harvard this fall. Most of the vegetables they grow are for their own con sumption. They also raise chickens and veal. The family is active in the Natural Organic Farmers Association and will host a garden tour at 7:30 p.pi. Tuesday, July 10, about methods of organic pest control. For more information about their strawberries, call the Gutts at 943-6149.
