Built in 1844 by Charles Cot- ting, probably as a store-room, it is situated across Main Street on the opposite corner from the mill that Charles Cotting and Theodore Purdy built that same year. Cotting, the builder of No. 90, (no evidence has surfaced for the unusual name for this building) was an important figure in Richmond history. Not only was he instrumental in building the mill, but he and Mr. Purdy also laid out the village of Richmond as well. Cotting came from Richmond, Vt. in 1836 and came by way of Kenosha spending some 36 days in crossing the Great Lakes. He and his wife settled first in Bristol, Wisconsin Territory before coming to Richmond in 1844. At the time the Cottings arrived, only two log cabins marked the site of Richmond. Charles Cotting died in the t , • 'OLD NUMBER 90 village in Feb., 1883. His widow, Sally Dike Cotting reached the age of 103 and passed away in 1902, after having lived in Rich mond nearly 65 years. The Society is pleased to be able to plaque "Old Number 90" as a way of encouraging local efforts at historical preser vation. Current owners, Albetft - F. and Mary K. Vanberkum operate "This Olde House Ah-*' tiques" there. Following the ; short 11:00 A.M. plaquing' ceremony, cake and coffee will be served. For informatioh ' concerning the Society's historic ; plaquing program, contact the' - museum at 815-923-2267. ';- There is some treatment for diseased trees Within the past few weeks, the Extension office has received many inquiries from around McHenry County regarding unhealthy shade trees. Most trees leafed out, but the leaves appear smaller than normal, curled on the edges, and discolored. The majority of the trees are infected with an- thracnose, a fungus disease which can affect a wide variety of woody plants. '̂*ORTWO TjORNSBY ̂ u, ow^r The (EXTENSION) People AMml Anthracnose is a disease wfciah can be caused lair several types of fungus organisms. These are active during cool, wet weather in spring, which is when sfcgots opening on trees are infected. In McHenry County, oak trees seem to be plagued the most, as was the case last year. Other trees frequently bothered' by an thracnose include silver maples, sugar maples, ash, and sycamore. Symptoms of anthracnose will vary somewhat with each in dividual species, but in most cases only leaves are affected, usually on lower portions of the tree. Typically, irregular brown or black areas will form, often along the midrib or ends of the leaves. Leaves may tend to curl or appear distorted, and can easily be confused with her bicide or insect damage. Caused by infection as leaves emerged in spring, this distortion is very common on oak. On trees such as maple, anthracnose may appear as irregular dark pat ches on the leaves, sometimes giving the tree a burned ap- peafance. w t-mafm Anthracnose will very rarely kill a tree, especially established shade trees. However, heavy infections can cause trees to drop lots of leaves early in the season, which may weaken trees if it happens year* after year. For this reason,' fertilizing trees is a good way to combat the problem because it? helps maintain true vigor. Trees. should be fertilized by the. , beginning of July to avoid in-* terfering with dormancy in-. during processes. \ Fungicide sprays are - available to help prevent a&-> thracnose problems, but they need to be applied as shoots, emerge to provide protection^ Spraying is generally only- suggested for smaller, younger trees. Contact the Extension office for materials to use for specific trees in question next: spring. ,~ii Another problem showing up on some shade trees is lqafi tatter, caused by excessive w4*84" and-or driving rain as delic em**d torn leaves are characteristic' this problem, which ususaty? occurs on trees with largte ( leaves. No control measures available, but the problem not harm the tree. Epson Computer Systems. EASIEST TO USE.
