PAGE 17 - PLA1NPEALER - WEDNESDAY, JULY 18,1W4 Sports Wah NM-rtek, Jr. ISFTA Singles completed in City tennis tournament Spin serve can help Y Last week we introduced Harry Scarey, recently retired broad caster for several major-league teams, to the spin serve. Harry, who's not known for his tall stature, was having trouble keeping his hard, flat serve in the court. Harry balked at the suggestion of adding spin to his serve, but now is willing to try it. "Hey, if it'll help me win my doubles matches with Steve, Milo and Arniedown in Palm Springs in the off-season, I'll do anything. Arnie's my partner and he has been known to make rather large side beta on the matches. He doesn't like it when I double fault," Harry sakl. * The first type of spin serve Harry will learn is the slice serve. This serve spins left to right toward the receiver when served by a righthander. Depending on the amount of spin the server imparts on the ball, the serve can book viciously. To hit this serve the righthanded server must toss the ball slightly to the right of the spot he normally tosses to when serving a flat serve. Hie service motion remains basically the as the regular service motion until just before the player strikes the ball. At this point the racquet starts to naturally move out to the player's right to make contact with the ball which has been tossed to the right. Instead of trying to make a square hit in the center of the strings, the player should try to "slide" the strings across the ball to generate spin. Some players find it helpful to think in terms of "booking" the racquet around the ball. The feeling of sliding the racquet across the hall is a strange one for players who have never Sliced a serve before. Harry was no exception. "Holy Cow is this weird!" exclaimed Harry. "That ball must have curved 20 feet to the side. Are you sure I can control this thing?" "Harry, it will take some practice to master the slice serve; just like it takes practice to master any skill you learn. It will be worth it, though. The slice will help pull Milo out of court and enable Arnie to put winners away to the vacated court. "The slice will also pull the ball down into court and make your serve more consistent. This is the easiest of the spin serves to hit oncg you let the racquet strings slide across the ball instead of into it," I replied. "O.K., I guess I'll have to get out on the old practice court and give this a try. You realty think I can do this slice serve, huh?" Harry asked. "I sure do, Harry. But like I said, it does take time on the practice court. Very few people pick it up in one lesson, or after just a few hits. So don't get discouraged when you sail the ball wide several times in practice. "And don't expect the serve to come on the first or even fifth day of practice. It may take a while. Keep the practice sessions to a maximum of 90 minutes so you dont throw your arm out. Pretty soon you'll have it mastered, Harry, and Steve and Milo won't know what hit 'em!" To the practice court, JameaTAnd"" dont spare theHorses?" Harry exclaimed as he grabbed a basket of practice balk. ~ We have room for one short question today before we finish, and here it is: Where should I stand to receive the aerve if a lefty is serving ? The lefthander's slice serve swings to the left of the reciever so position yourself a good three feet to the left of your normal position on slice serves. Some players find that standing in several feet to receive the slice serve helps them to hit the return before the serve has a chance to swing the player way to the side. Of course, if the lefy is hitting a more normal, flatter serve which does not curve, you may play just slightly to the left of your position.
