Fair premium books are now available The 1984 McHenry County fair premium book for Junior and Open competition is now available, and the lime-green covered book includes a tribute to one of the builders of this county attraction. Elwood Davis, who retired from the board following 10 years of service, is feted in the introduction to the 44-page book. Davis retired from the county highway department four years ago and since that time has managed the fairgrounds and coordinated building rentals until early this spring. Pete Reiland, fail* secretary, said Elwood will return from his Arkansas home before fair time to assist in preparation for the 1984 event August 1 to 5. Davis had a major role in im­ provements at the fairgrounds while managing the facilities. The annual Premium Book is available at the fair office on the fairgrounds Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m inducting noon hour. Reiland stresses that entries in virtually all classes closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18. The book includes details on the antique show, tractor pulling, horse shows, talent contest and livestock auction, in addition to pages of information on agricultural and home economics exhibi t ion possibilities. Country Jamboree scheduled for The Lambs anniversary The Lambs Annual Country Jamboree kicks off a two-day tenth anniversary celebration Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Lambs is located at the junction of 1-94 and Route 176, two miles east of Libertyville. The jamboree will feature country music Stars, radio personalities, gourmet food, and a variety of summer en­ tertainment for the entire family. Both admission and parking are free; however, a donation at the gate will be appreciated. Proceeds directly benefit The Lambs, a not-for-profit com­ munity for mentally retarded adults. Additional parking will be available in parking lots of surrounding businesses. A free shuttle bus will be provided to and from The Lambs' grounds. Saturday's spectacular line­ up of performers include Country & Western star Lynn Anderson who will sing her hit single, "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden". Sunday, Gary Morris returns to The Lambs for the second year in a row, having recently won the Academy of Country Music Song of the Year Award for "Wind Beneath My Wings" and Billboard's New Male Single Artist of the Year Award. The Lambs Country Inn Restaurant will be closed the days of the jamboree; however, chefs will be serving delicious outdoor specialties including broiled salmon, BBQ pork, and Shish Kabobs. The funds they earn are used to support the group's many educat ional act ivi t ies : for example, programs on en­ vironmental topics ranging from mosquito control to land­ fills, a scholarship of $750 to a McHenry County upper-class college student, numerous publications in addition to a monthly newsletter, a library on environmental issues, a speaker's bureau whose ser­ vices are available to schools, clubs and other organizations. In addition, the Defenders maintain an office in Central School, Crystal Lake, 459-0450, with a staff on hand to give advice on environmental problems. Co-sponsoring the drive on Saturday, July 21, will be the Lake-in-the-Hills Boy Scout Troop 152, under the scout mastership of Dale McDowell. The drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of MeHenry Community High School West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake, Rd. Readers can help these organizations by ringing any of the following items to the recycling drive: newspapers (no junk mail or magazines in­ cluded) "tin" cans washed and flattened, glass containers which have all metal and plastic removed, brown paper bags and cardboard in easy-to-handle bundles, used motor oil, aluminum scrap of all kinds. The Defenders will also buy 100 percent aluminum cans; 29 cents per pound if crushed, 27 cents per pound if uncrushed. A penny per pound bonus is paid for lots of more than 100 pounds.
