Approximately 600 people attended the auction at Andre's Steak House in Richmond. Total bidding exceeded $5 million. "We had small people and big people," commented M. Eugene Purdy, Jr., of Eberhardt, the marketing agent for the business transaction. "There were sites from one acre to 365 acres." Northern Pump Farms, located midway between McHenry and Richmond in unincorporated McHenry County, was one of the largest agricultural tracts in northern Illinois. It was known for its NEED CASH? Trustees of the farm chose to offer the farm in parcels at pubic auction so as to extend an equal and fair opportunity to all prospective buyers, according to Gordon Stade, auctioneer. Land sales by public auction are a growing business, said Purdy. "You know it's going to be sold," he said. " Everyone gets a fair shot at it. It is truly the most effective way to sell far mland and easier than selling by private negotiation." When the day's bidding was over, 37 parcels were sold in 27 units. There were 245 total bidders.
