(ABC) OLYMPICS WAVE SICK -- Enough with the wave, already! In some major-league cities, it's audience partici pation time as fans try to help their heroes by form ing a wave that carries from one end of the stands to the other. They stand and then sit by sections, giving an overall impression of a big wave, cheering all the way. If they want exercise, they should be out jogging. ABC, in its early Monday night baseball broad casts. gave almost as much camera time to the waves as it did to the game. It's enough to make the baseball traditionalist wish the world had stopped when Bobby Thomson hit his famous home run back in 1951. If the wave isn't enough, the baseball fan also has his attention diverted by the San Diego Chicken syndrome. This is a character dressed in the home team logo -- a St. Louis Cardinal, a Baltimore Ori ole or a Philly Phanatic--whose main talent seems to be doing bumps and grinds on the home team's dugout roof. The humor goes down from there. We don't know what can be done to hold back the wave, but one fan has an idea on handling the chicken (or as he calls it. the duck) problem. This fan wants the team to have a door prize at each game, with the winner receiving a rifle and one bullet. The duck is then set loose running on the field, and the lucky winner gets one shot at him. The baseball purist believes this could wipe out the pesky duck problem forever. With the wave, the duck, artificial turf, the desig nated hitter and the rock music between innings, the ticket-buying fan could be driven back home to watch 'The Battle of the Network Stars."
