Athletes won't be the only ones to break records this year; the network will be setting records of its own, though not the type that wiN gamer the Olympic gold. ABC will broadcast an unprecedented 187% hours of the games from July 27 to Aug. 13, includ ing weekday, daytime cov erage for the first time. The broadcast will be fed to more than 140 countries on six continents. Here are some of the American athletes to watch during those hours: Carl Lewis -- The reign ing 100-meter World Champion may become the only Olympian since Jesse Owens to win the 100 meters. 200 meters. 4x 100-meter relay and long jump. Mary Decker -- Last year in Helsinki. Miss Deck er earned a double victory in the 1.500 and 3.000 meters in the first track and field World Championships. Injuries and the American boycott kept her out of the * 1976 and 1980 games. Peter Vidmar -- A two- time winner of the NCAA ail-around championship. Vidmar has an excellent chance of joining the exclu sive club of American men who have won Olympic medals in gymnastics. Greg Louganis -- The diver has earned 18 perfect Roone Arledge 10.0s as well as 752.87 total points in a single 3- meter springboard compe tition. No other diver hat received more than sever 10.0s or broken 700 points Edwin Moses -- Thii four-time world recorc breaker has won 8< straight races in the 400 meter hurdles since 1977. Advertisers, expecting millions of viewers to wattf these and other hopefuls, have paid befweer $215,000 and $260,000 fOt each 30-second prime-time commercial slot. ABC News and Sports President Roone Arledge expects the network to gross more thar $440 million from the event, even after spending $200 million to produce the coverage and paying $22E million in broadcasting rights to the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee. That amount, however, is now being disputed because of a con tract clause calling for a reduction in the event that major countries boycott. ©*
