Topspin serve; although difficult, aids game Walt Harriett, Jr. HSPTA "Hey, Pro, c'mere and look at this," yelled Harry Scarey across two tennis courts. Last week Harry, the former major-league baseball announcer who retired to take up tennis, took a lesson on the slice serve. Harry couldn't get the ball in the court very well hitting hard and flat. So, we taught Harry to slice his serve for more consistency. "Arnie ought to really like this serve. Watch," said Harry as he picked up a ball. Harry tossed the ball slightly to his right and swung through it, * right to left. He hit a perfect slice serve which landed in the right corner of the service court and hooked wickedly off to the right. "Nice serve, Harry. What can you do for an encore?" I asked. A gasping Harry replied: "Encore? It took me a full week of practice every day to learn the slice serve. And now you want an encore? Holy Cow!" Since Harry is such a bright student, I suggested something new. "Well, Harry, you picked up the slice serve so quickly, I thought maybe you'd like to try the topspin serve. Then, you'd have two good serves to use instead of one," I said. Hitting up on the ball is easy if the player lets the toss drop slightly IN THE ISLAND LAKE SHOPPING CENTER NOW OPEN OFF f HE WALL VIDEO 215 E. As in the slice serve, practice is required to master the new stroke. Once learned, the serve will be effective as both a first and second serve in doubles because it gives the server time to get into net position when serving and volleying. The topspin serve is a little more difficult to learn than the slice serve for the average player. Once a player learns the topspin serve, however, it soon becomes the mainstay of his or her arsenal. The slice serve is then used for variety and "changeups." To hit the topspin serve, a right-handed player must toss slightly to> the left and directly above the head rather than to the right and in front of the body as in the slice serve. The toss to the left will force the player to swing the racket from left to right through the ball, just the opposite of the slice serve. The toss to the left will also force the player to arch the back slightly before contacting the ball. Players will find a similar "feel" to the slice and topspin serves as in both serves the ball seems to slide across the strings rather than contacting them squarely. A good topspin serve will arch over the net and drop into the court. Hie spin imparted on the ball pulls the shot down. It is important, therefore, to hit up on the ball and go for two feet of clearance over the net to counteract the effects of the spin. It also enables the right-hander to more easily serve to another righty's backhand. The serve can be hit with more or less spin by snapping the wrist harder or softer. It took Harry another couple of weeks to master the topspin serve, and another few months to really have the slice and topspin serves working well. The next time I saw him, he was engaged in one of his famous doubles battles with Arnie, Milo and Steve, who were in town relaxing during the All-Star break. Harry was serving at match point when he noticed me at court- side. He turned around, wiped off his black-rimmed glasses, point and me and said: "This serve's for you, bud." Harry then arched his back and sent a strong topspin serve to Milo's backhand. Milo gophered the ball into the net. Harry turned around and beamed one of his famous squinty smiles at me before rushing to the net to shake hands with the losers.
