JULY 25. 1184 Sports Red Devils denied use of Harvard field, head to C'ville HARVARD -- The McHenry County Red Devils, whose Harvard regular-season schedule has been decimated by teams dropping from the league, were denied last week by the Harvard school board a request to play two exhibition games at Dan Home Field. The Red Devils will play their entire home schedule at a field in Carpentersville, a Kane County municipality. In a letter dated July 12, team general manager Bill Downs asked the board to allow the semi-professional football team to play games on July 28 and Aug. 4, dates previously not scheduled. The team also asked that the $10,000 performance bond requirement be dropped because the games would be played before the start of the high school season. "THIS IS NEWS to me this evening," Supt. Robert Cassidy said. "I would like to go back to the initial recommendation to the board: Let's drop the issue." Two months after the Red Devils requested use of the field, the school board, on a 4-3 vote in April, allowed the team to use the field as long as there were no conflicts with high school ac­ tivities. Cassidy had recom­ mended that the request be denied. According to the original schedule presented' to the district, the Red Devils planned to play four Harvard games in August, September and October. Team President Bob Dixon said he was "disappointed" by the board's action. "The school btftpd has to run the school and I know they think they're doing right," he said later. Because the teams dropped, Nolan said, the league had to revise its schedule. In the new schedule, no games could be played at Harvard because of conflicts with the high school football schedule. "So we asked the school board to at least (let the Red Devils) play a couple exhibition games," Nolan s$id. "This would be five weeks before the school had its first game." The team has now been allowed to use the former Dundee High School football field in Carpentersville. In the original schedule, the Red Devils were to play three exhibition and two regular season games at the Kane County site. Nolan said the Red Devils will be able to play the two games they sought to play in Harvard, at the District 300 field. The team practices at the field, and many of the players are from * the area. "There is absolutely no problem with playing down there," Dixon said. "Tliat field is available any time." Last year the Red Devils played their home schedule of six games at Dan Horne Field on a one-year trial basis. Last season the team belonged to the Northern States Football League, which plays its games in the summer before the start of high school seasons.
