Final per­ formances will be on July 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" opened on Broadway in 1971 with Peter Falk in the lead role of Mel play is about Mel and Edna Edison who live on the 14th floor of an apartment building on Second Avenue in New York City. Everything that could possible go wrong to Mel and Edna does. The air conditioning doesn't work, the neighbors are feu 1, Mel looses his job, and on and on and on. The play has a lot of typical Simon one-liners, a few serious and poignant moments and a lot of outrageous situations. It's not Neil Simon's best play but it does have a lot of laughs and interesting characters. The Pullman Players production of "Prisoner" does have some slow moments, but mostly it is a good production. Bill Bunton, a veteran of many local productions, played Mel Edison and got the largest share of the laughs in the play. Bunton understood the character and his dead-pan looks com­ municated Mel's frustration very well. As Edna, Carole Mullowney started out tentatively but slowly grew in the role. The play begins slowly and Edna has very little to do in the first scene except react. Even though the fust scene takes place at 2:30 in the morning, Edna needs to come alive a little earlier. In­ stead of just shrugging her shoulders and running her fingers through her hair, she should have been fiestier and more awake., Mullowney was much better in the second act when Edna became more ac­ tive. As Mel's three sisters Jacqueline Giles, Frances Bottom, and Mickey Mandel were all great. They have an excellent scene in the second act when they try to patch up Mel's life/' 'Mickey Maude) as Pauline was my favorite sister and I'd like to see her in larger roles. Rick Mohr was acceptable as Mel's brother Harry. As mentioned before, the production did have some slow spots. There is an un- necessarily long burglary scene- it could easily be cut in half. And there were times t felt the action a little heavy-handed. Some situations were treated a little too seriously and therefore dragged on. Hie Pullman Players have an informal theatre located in The Old Church Theatre in Wauconda. Everyone involved in the operation, whether on stage or off, is there to please you. "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" runs one more weekend in Wauconda. THE CITY OF ELGIN AND ELGIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESENT
