Residents swelter in record-breaking heat SECTION 2 - PAGE 9 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JULY 25,1884 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 26, 1934) All heat records for July were broken in this territory Tuesday and residents sweltered in a long seven day heat spell which brought a toll of over 700 deaths throughout the country. Forecaster Donnel of Chicago stated that the official tem perature of 109 degrees in Chicago was the highest ever reached on a government thermometer here since the establishment of the weather bureau in 1871. Hot nights as well as days brought no relief and local residents have suf fered from the heat and drought of the past several days. TWICE rwn lOLD TALES Edited years gone • The sweltering heat of the weekend sent hundreds of persons seeking relief to lakes and rivers in this region and resulted in three deaths in Lake and McHenry counties. The Standard Oil Service offered "the finest motor oil" for 26 cents per quart. Tike Palace Tavern on Green Street called itself "The Coolest Place in Town" and advertised "Our beer is cooled by electric refrigeration and, therefore, it's abetter. A trial will convince." local soldier. He was confined to a hospital in Naples for 10 days, after which he returned to his company. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 23, 1959) A meeting of the Taxpayers Protest Group of McHenry township was held Monday evening, July 20, at the John- sburg Community Club. Aproximately 200 people turned out and about 100 of these filed official protest of their tax bills. Included in this group of protestors are residents from Sunnyside Estates, Village of Sunnyside, Jak-Ana Heights, Pistakee Highlands, Niesen's subdivision, Oeffling's sub division, Wonder Lake, Mc- Cullom Lake, Eastwood Manor and Johnsburg. The meeting was presided over by Tom Hanahan. Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson received the award for good citizenship given every year by the V.F.W. during the «nnn«i carnival. Mrs. Thompson, who is an active member of the auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters of America, has given generously of her time to help those in need. She has been associated on a voluntary basis with the local hospital for two years and has spent over 300 hours entertaining the veterans at Downey hospital. A young Wonder Lake college student, James Brolin, 20, who was working as flagman for the state highway department during summer vacation, was pinned against an embankment when two cars collided last Friday near Eastwood Manor subdivision on Route 120. Brolin was reported recovering at the McHenry hospital. (Taken from the files of July 24, 1974) The new Northern Illinois Medical center, to be built on Route 31 between McHenry and Crystal Lake, will be designed and engineered by the firms of Welton Becket and Associates and Medical Architectonics," LeRoy E. Olsen, president of the McHenry hospital board of directors, announced this week. "We will continue to enlarge our medical staff of physician specialists and general prac titioners in independent and group practice," Olsen stated. The Northern Illinois Medical center, which has been five years in the planning, has received the approval of the Fox Dairy princess in state competition I FORTY YEARS AGO ; (Taken from the files of July ;27, 1944) • The County 4-H Club I Federation, made up of 315 girls 'and 225 boys, are busy raising ; money to buy an ambulance to ;be presented to the army this | fall. Sharon Ainger, McHenry County Dairy Princess the past year, will be one of none can didates seeking the American Dairy Association of Illinois Dairy Princess title this week. The candidates were to meet at Quincy yesterday to give a five-minute presentation on the importance of dairy products and discuss any special promotion ideas they have that may make their candidacy stand out. Sharon is the daugher of Mr. and Mrs. George Ainger, Harvard. For the past year she has represented the McHenry County Dairy Promotion Council, her sponsor in the statewide competition. Her duties have included talks before civic groups, ap pearances at grocery store promotions, radio interviews, help at the Dairy Booth during the McHenry County Fair, and participation in many parades. J The Dairy Princess coronation took place at the Ramada Inn in Quincy following the Dairy Banquet sponsored by local hosts. The ADA of Illinois supervises the contest. Judging stresses the winner's knowledge of dairy products and the dairy industry and an ability to vocalize that knowledge in an understandable and friendly manner. ARE YOU NEW IN The McHenry Areo?
