PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JULY 25,1184 Setting the record straight on anniversary Crime of the Week "Dear Friend Zeke, Am looking over your last letter which I didn't answer. The pictures of the MCHS grads and athletes are treasures. That annual get-together is a high spot in the year. Hope all of you stay healthy so I can meet you again in 1965. I really like that picture of Schmaltz and me. With my coat buttoned and his sweater open, he makes me look slender. This last paragraph in your letter may need a slight correction: So I Hear by Earl Walsh An appropriate Bacon-ism to close- "Age appears to be best in four things - old wood best to burn - old wine to drink - old friends to trust and old authors to read." This Bacon was Sir Francis. Keep going, Earl, it's down to under 12 months now for your fiftieth." II * SUN Just to keep the records straight, my 49th year with the Plaindealer will have its an niversary August 5. God willing, management willing and readers willing, I will go on to hit the 50 mark. I'll promise to retire then. Am surprised you would get mixed up on a date. As I remember, you kept your dates in younger years. Of course, you had my help. Keep forgetting, but will take that special picture to Dotty this week. I know you work crossword puzzles. Me, too. Seemed recently I was slipping. Then, I noticed fine print explaining that this is more challenging. The one I was accustomed to has been moved to another section of the paper. What a relief to learn what my slipping was all about. Each issue of the Arizona Highways, which you have provided, is more beautiful than the last. Another good friend sends me "Illinois", the magazine of the Prairie State. I'm having a great time going through "Illinois". There is so much to learn about our own stae besides the goings-on in McHenry County. SUDDEN THOUGHT Does anybody ever change shoe laces before they break? Saw Howard Phalin this week. Nobody believes me when I tell about Howard and I being on the 4-H cow judging team that represented Illinois at the In ternational Stock Show in Minneapolis. We finished 13th out of the 48 states entered. Nobodv believes that, either. Hie Cubs are hotter than a dime store pistol while the Sox are still loading their guns. The Cubs are drawing big crowds, but would you believe? Herb Reihansperger tried to get a busload of fans to attend one of the games and couldn't half fill the bus. Wasn't that sad?! Herb finally got MelPrustto go with him to a game. The Cubs won a squeaker. That reminds me. Mel asked me about local restaurants, mentioning the different nationalities which are operating the feeding troughs, but no Irish. I'm researching. The Little Chef has Shirley Klapperich, who is half Irish. Marty Conway is her father. Jack Slaughter cooks up pizza and ribs. They say he is part Irish, but a mixture. Across the Pearl St. bridge, we have the Johnny Murphy Restaurant and Lounge. We are gaining. From out of the west this week came the Bryon Klontz family. They are transplanted McHenryites who moved to Colorado. Sharon, (one of Earl's girls), her Mom (Mrs. Bill Klap perich), and children, Kale and Lisa, came to and through our door. Jason and his dad headed back for home so we missed seeing them. We learned that Jason has grown tall - a long way from times when he used to come to my desk and sit on my lap. It is remarkable how well and able our 76er group hangs in there. In looking over our dates- to-remember book, I get a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach. Many of our old friends have passed away. It also bothers me when physical problems cause me to miss wakes, Masses for the deceased, and other events. But, a person never has to look far to find somebody worse off. Hiat made my day. Arnold and I usually settle all world problems. On Saturday we had help. In order of their appearance, A1 Jourdan, Judge Herrmann and Joe Gausden came to our table. That took care of everything. Alvina and I were as happy as kids going to a birthday party when Joan Schloskey called to invite us to a surprise party for John Busscher. It marked 50 years for John as a member of McHenry Country Club. That goes back to the days when you used to write about Corky, Lordy and Boots in your popular column, "Bacon's Strip". John said he and I became acquainted in 1969. Being a staunch Cub fan, he must remember that '69 was the famous year when Leo Durocher almost won the National League pennant. Yep. Almost. Ed Buss was pressed into service to M.C. the program and did a masterful job, calling on Vale Adams and Warren Schloskey and the man himself, John Busscher. Others were introduced and took a bow. John and his wife, Letty, were King and Queen for the day -- and for many days to come. Well, Zeke, this started out as a note to get you straight on my retirement date. Look what happened! Writing only once a week, I sometimes get carried away. Hello to Charlotte and Good Health to both of you. Sincerely, S.I.H." This week Crime Stoppers is seeking information on a burglary to the Gas House Tavern, located at 850 N.W. Hwy., Fox River Grove. Sometime after 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, burglars broke into the tavern through a window located at the front of the building. Once inside, the burglars broke open coin boxes on several pool tables. They also removed the money from a cash register. Total loss exceeds $500. Police investigators are still seeking leads in this case and Crime Stoppers wants to help catch the person or persons responsible. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for in- fromation leading to the arrest and filing of criminal charges against offenders. If you have any information on this burglary to the Gas House Tavern in Fox River Grove on April 18, or information on any other crimes, call Crime Stoppers at (815) 459-4800. All callers remain anonymous - one never needs to give a name. Crime Stoppers, which is sponsored by the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce, assigns secret numbers to anonymous callers who provide in formation. Callers are in structed to call back at regular intervals to find out if any suspects have been arrested as a result of confidential in formation given. If there are arrests, the Crime Stoppers board of directors then meets to determine an ap propriate reward. A secret meeting is arranged to make the cash reward payments. Anonymous callers to Crime Stoppers do not have to appear in court. * Vacancies announced on Area Agency for Aging Region Two Area Agency on Aging is seeking a McHenry County resident to represent McHenry County as a volunteer on their board of directors to fill an unexpired term until November, 1985.
