The hatchery started in the base ment of the family home in 1940, then grew to the downtown business loca tion on Route 47. By 1955, Henry was hatching 400,000 eggs a year, had 23 hatching flocks in the area under his supervision supplying him with eggs, and featured DeKalb chicks, Hon- neger Leghorns and White Rocks. Little wonder he enjoyed taking a por table brooder to the county fa i r for his many friends to enjoy the wonders of nature! When Mark Hansen, one of the most enthusiastic and able leaders of the early fairs, became president in 1951, Henry became vice president. He served as vice president under Mark in 1952, then took over the presidency from 1953 through 1956. He also serv ed as a director for several years following his tenure as president. Helen remembers those years for the difficulties because of bad weather, the hard work required, and the successful fairs made possible because hundreds of volunteers united to help the fledgling exhibition and entertainment event grow. But Helen stresses the enjoyment of meeting so many "nice people" year after year dominates her recollection of county fair time. "We enjoyed working with the boys and girls. Henry was deeply commit ted to 4-H and what it would do for young people. He was the first person in McHenry County to receive the Na tional 4-H Alumni Recognition Award. This was given him in 1958." Henry Marlowe is one of eight men to serve as president of the McHenry County Fair Association and, in honoring Henry, we also salute these leaders who have guided the fair to a prestigious five-day event attracting 100,000 people annually: 1949-1950 -- Einar Bakkom 1951-1952 - Mark Hansen 1953-1956 -- Henry Marlowe 1957-1958 -- Lyle Paulsen 1959-1960 -- Loren Massey 1961-1963 - Carl Bault 1964-1970 -- Don Hansen 1970-1984 (following death of Don Hansen in late 1969) -- Charles Weingart J^Mid-Year CLEARANCE SALE Super Screen |0 H mm o COLOR TV NOW ONLY *348 Zt9.°6W ĵ ^NNELCAP FINE-FURNITURE CONSOLE with 1S7 CHANNEL ELECTRONIC TUNING CAPABILITY SPACE COMMAND Remote Control SS256SNK • Dependable 100% Modular Z-1 Chassis tor long-life dependability NOW ONLY *598 THIS NEW 1984 OR2&S0BT video products TOTAL VALUE OVER $ 181000. -No Obligation to Purchase cW turbo FILL OUT ENTRY BLANK AND DROP IT IN THE CONTEST BOX HURRY IN TODAY-TO...
