The three were soon working as sidemen for a lounge entertainer and during their leisure hours on the road began writing songs together. In the spring of 1981, Lon, Jerry and Joe decided to quit working as sidemen, form a band and try their luck at professional songwriting. While working the Nashville lounge circuit as a Top 40 band, the trio pawned a diamond ring for $400, which bought enough studio time to record six original songs. The tape was played for music publishers on Music Row and finally caught the ear of independent record producer Stan Cornelius, who signed the fledgling group to a record production contract. Noted Muscle Shoals producer engineer Mike Daniel was invited to join the team as co-producer. Meanwhile, Lon, Jerry and Joe began the search for two more perma nent band members. Jerry Ray Johnston, a native of West Monroe, La., and a longtime friend of Lon's, accepted the offer to play drums and sing. Jerry Ray spent his earlier years on a farm and work ing in a paper mill while drumming with various bands. He was attending North Texas State University as a music education major when the lure of performing brought him back onto the road and to Music City, where he found a job drumming with Charly McClain. In Bandana, Jerry Ray soon became a front line lead vocalist with Lon Wilson alternating on drums. The search for a guitarist vocalist l e d t o T o m M e n z i e s f r o m Mechanicsville, Va. A young veteran of various road bands, Tim had per formed with his family, the Singing Menzies, in and around his home state since the age of three. Besides his parents, brothers and sisters, his musical influences include a smorgasbord of styles ranging from Bill Monroe and Merle Haggard to Joe Pass and Steve Morse. Tim's ver satility as a guitarist and his superb vocals were the final ingredients in the blend of talents that has become Bandana. • .
