A member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Hall has earned one or more BMI awards each year since Jimmy C. Newman recorded "DJ For A Day," the first Tom T. Hall song ever recorded. His songs have been recorded by Perry Como, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare. George Burns, Patti Page and many others but, Hall says, "When I couldn't find anyone else to record my songs, I decided to sing them myself." And in 1967, he began his solo recor ding career on Mercury Records with "I Washed My Face in the Mountain Dew." He followed up with "A Week In a Country Jail" which took him to the Number One spot in the country charts. But it was not until 1968 that a con troversial song about the mother of a teenage girl who "socked it to" the Harper Valley PTA made its creator, Tom T. Hall, a name synonymous with country music's best. Jeannie C. Riley's version of "Harper Valley PTA" swept the national charts - both pop and country--and sold more than six minion records, earning Hall a Country Music Association award and the national recognition he now enjoys. Hall, established as a successful writer and recording artist, continued to record his own compositions with "Country Is," "Sneaky Snake," "I Care," "I Like Beer," "The Year Clayton Delaney Died," "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine." "I Love," and "The Ballad of Forty Dollars." The Ivughing Moti itf Woodmwii Cow. is Hall's third book for Doubleday. His previous works are How I Write Son*v Why You Can and The Sloryteller \ Nashville, which is not only an autobiography hot also chronicles the growth of the Nashville music industry. A member of the prestigious Grand Ole Opry, Hall also -hosts the syn dicated television show "Pop Goes the Country" which is taped at Opry land and features a variety of country music's top talent He runs his own publishing com pany, known as Hall Note Music, in conjunction with Toy Box recording studio.
