" But conflicting ideol­ ogy played lor comedy has lit­ tle lo do with "Top Secret." a new film from the writers and directors Of the hugely funny and very successful spoof. "Airplane." In fact, comedy has little to do with this film. The gags are lame and predictable, and the story is not even serviceable as a means of tying the jokes together What "Top Secret" lacks most is fertile ground „ which needs spoofing: The limp premise of "Top Secret" seems borrowed from several different sources. A young rock singer ends up ki East Berlin just as that side of Germany appears headed for the Fourth Reich. We are handed several scenarios: a brilliant professor working on a fantastic new invention designed for peaceful use but turned to evil by his captors; his daughter, a beautiful maid­ en in distress working for the underground: and the under­ ground itself, a groitf of par­ tisans who all speisk with French accents but are fighting in East Germany. If it sounds like the misadventures of Max­ well Smart you're right, but with far fewer laughs v Like "Airplane," which had a flashback spoof of "Satur­ day Night Fever." "Top Secret" has a flashback send- up of "Blue Lagoon " if ever there was a Mm that could be satirized. "Blue Lagoon" is a prime candidate, but here again the jokes just aren't there. At times the film appears to be on the verge of poking fun at a bunch of movies, including "Casablan­ ca." "Beach Blanket Bingo" .or any of the Elvis Presley epics.
