If I, in any way, put a wrong time, wrong total of money or anything, I can be fined." There are several pieces of infor mation on the Eligibility Sheet that deal directly to the horse and other in formation that deals with the race. Some of the lion-horse information includes: Where the race was held,* the date, the total purse raced for and the condition of the track. The horse-related data includes: pole position at the start, the horse's split time at the one-quarter, one-half, three-quarters and finish and where the horse finishes. If the horse wins, she must record the distance of vic tory in lengths, or if the horse doesn't win, the distance in lengths the horse finished out of first; the total purse in that race and the horse's cumulative winnings for the year. The cumulative earnings are a determining factor in which races the horse can enter. Each race has a "condition" or limit to how much money each horse in the race had earned. An example of a condition is "non-winner of $2,500," which means for a horse to be eligible for the race, it must have earned less than $2,500 in its career. "If you have a horse that has won only $1,000 you don't want it to race against horses that have won $100,000, do you? That wouldn't be fair," Leonard said. Because horses travel the harness racing circuit around the state and compete for thousands of dollars, all the information must be complete and accurate. Leonard said the test she took two years ago to become a licens ed clerk was five pages in length. "It was unbelievable," she said roll ing her eyes. "I couldn't believe some of the things they asked. . .what to do with a horse from out of the country; what are the fines in certain situa tions. . .1 hope I never have to take that test again." All information she receives travels with the horse from city to city, race to race, county fair to county fair. Nancy Leonard said she got into clerking (she's in her 10th year) "The world's finest bike since 1899 9 9 It's Time for Biking... and we have over 200 bikes to choose from •RACING •TOURING •RECREATIONAL •12 and 18 SPEEDS •Bikes for everyone in the whole family eao 201SV2 Soatk Rorite 47, Woodstock, S15/338-6MS Moaday thru Tharsday 9-6; Friday 9-S; Saturday 9-5 mainly because her husband, Terry, is a trainer and part-owner of approx imately 35 horses at Leonard Stables. And like most horse operations, the Leonard's operation is a family af fair. Nancy didn't want to be left out. She is hired by each county's Fair Association to clerk their races and, through her work, gets a "clerking reputation" that can benefit or hinder her obtaining jobs. "People in the horse business know who the good ones and the bad ones are," she said "But I've really enjoyed it," she said. "If I wanted to, I could possibly go into Chicago and get a job doing it. Like I said, it's a lot of work, but I like the challenge." adidas ̂ YOUR ADMISSION... To comfort, quality and, best of all, price savings!
