' - competitors Pot's been sweetened for this year's stake races By Sam Natrop Shaw /Free Press Media . WOODSTOCK -- The pot has been sweetened and Jack Hayes is hoping people will stand up and take notice. The McHenry County Fair, for the first time in several years, will pro vide stake races. The main characteristics of stake races are: There is a substantial entry fee to enter the race, and the size of the purse that will be raced for is fattened. There will be four stake races, two on Wednesday, Aug. 1, and two more on Thursday, Aug. 2. "The purses at county fairs haven't gone up for I don't know how many years," Hayes, the race secretary, said. "They (horse owners) are still racing for $500 and $600 purses. They can't afford that." Wednesday's races will have a total < purse of approximately $3,000 while Thursday's races for pacers and trot ters are for an estimated $8,000. One horse will not win the entire amount as harness racing purses are split, depending on the number of en tries. If 12 horses enter the race, for example, the purse will be split into two, six-horse races as the Woodstock track cannot handle more than six horses per race. Each sub-race (called a division) would then race for $4,000. Harness racing pays five places: 45 percent for 1st, 25 percent for 2nd, 15 percent for 3rd, 10 percent for 4th and five per cent for 5th. - continued on page 75 knuth's ••• your complete OFFICE MACHINE DEALER Canon Plain Papar Personal Cartridge COPIERS Starting at •78500 Smith-Corona TYPfTRONIC III J SKOAL with 6,000 character memory *795°° "sKarp OFFICE CALCULATORS Starting at Royal Cavalier 1M0 ELECTRIC TYPEWRITER with carrying •239* Electric portable typewriter SI Ivor-Rood ELECTRONIC TYPEWRITER 9tmrHn§ At •379" Swinlac M--yy Dirty orrici iuctronic TYPEWRITER with «« character correction knuth' P.O.
