Throw a pie in the fat lady's face, as in the days of Laurel and Hardy, and someone always laughs. Hard ly a sophisticated method, yet it does the job. Look over the current spate of often puerile comedies float ing around these days at drive- ins or quickly consigned to cable, and you'll see that things haven't changed much. True, instead of banana peels and pies in the face, today's comedies are more likely built solely on beer, bikinis and blankets. Yet despite the fact that everyone in today's films of this type seems to be 17 and somehow involved in more than a little sex, the slapstick is still alive. There's little clever ness to this type of comedy, yet it still gets guffaws. As such adolescent come dies go. "Bachelor Party" is one of the best of the bunch. Many of the same folks who wrote "Police Academy." with its slapstick antics of modem- day Keystone Kopo, now shift their subject matter to the ribald occurrences surrounding a particularly zany bachelor party. "Bachelor Party" won't be hailed as a classic of come dy, but for some light summer laughs. It delivers. Director Neal Israel takes care in developing many of his gags, and the script he co- wrote with Pat Proft contains more than a few elements of classic farce. Bedroom doors reveal compromising situa tions. disguises backfire, and everyone seems to be at the wrong place at the right time. AH this mayhem needs a pivot point, and "Bachelor Party" has Tom Hanks. His timing is flawless and his loori- ness carefully rehearsed. Although the film casts its vote for marital fidelity in the end. it takes great pleasure in showing us (he other side of the coin. Thus the film has an inherent "do as I say. not as I do" attitude. "Ghostbusters" may be the comedy hit of the summer, but if you like your comedy a bit more on the bawdy side, visit "Bachelor Party." ©*
