-- j # # SECTION 2 - PAGE 17 • PLAIN DEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 19M Lawns under stress in hot, humid weather Survey on employment slated Hot, humid weather puts a great deal of stress on home lawns, which favors Himny development. A major now appearing on Kentucky bluegrass lawns in the McHenry County area is Fusarium blight. (EXTENSION) People AAAifll there are several factors which favor Fusarium development. First of all; warm, humid weather is needed. Not only does this put stress on the lawn, but under these conditions the fungus is most active. During humid weather, turf grass plants sta; moist for extended periods time, which helps the disease advance. Fusarium blight, caused by a fungus, can be a devastating turfgras8 disease. Typical symptoms are irregular ring or crescent shaped patches in the lawn, ranging in size from a few inches to wider than 2 feet. Oftentimes patches take on a "frog-eye" appearance, with green grass growing in the centers. In advanced stages, the irregular dead patches begin to overlap, killing entire lawns in some cases. McHENRY SHORES The city council has decided to proceed with an examination of the septic systems at the two McHenry Shores buildings acquired through the annexation of the village. Depending on cost, the council may repair the systems with the intention of either selling or leasing the property. Lawns with poorly developed root systems are prime targets for Fusarium attack. Com pacted soils, excessive thatch buildup, irratic nitrogen fer tility, mowing too short or in frequently, and frequent, light waterings all contribute to poor toot development. Additionally, a common problem in this area is sod grown on soils quite dif ferent than the soil on the site it is layed, which leads to a distinct layering effect developing between the two incompatible soils. Very few roots grow beyond the thin layer of soil that comes in on the sod, thus these lawns go under stress very rapidly in summer. This is why Fusarium blight is most common on lawns sodded within the past few years. There are several. ways to control Fusarium. Applying fungicides, such as Tersan 1991, Chipco 26019, or Bayleton, will provide protection if applied as the disease first starts to ap pear. Thus, chemical controls become expensive and are only a temporary solution to the problem. There are several cultural practices, however, which will help improve turf growing conditions and in turn reduce susceptibility to Fusarium. Dethatching with a vertical mower or power rake in early fall should be the first step; assuming a heavy thatch layer- exists. Core cultivation, or aerification, is an extremely helpful turf management practice that should follow dethatching for several seasons to help reduce thatch buildup. This practice also is valubable in solving ~ soil compaction problems, which will lead to better root growth, even on lawns without a thatch problem. Finally, sound lawn management practices should always be followed to reduce disease potential. Mow on a regular basis so not more than about 25 percent of the leaf blade is removed in one cutting. A height of about 2% to 3 inches is ideal for summer. Water in frequently but deep as the lawn needs it. Do not apply ex cessively high rates of nitrogen, expecially in late spring and early summer. Finally, thoroughly prepare the soil before laying sod or seeding a new lawn. For more information on lawn care or related topics, contact the McHenry County Cooperative Extension Office, 789 McHenry Avenue, P.O. Box 431, Woodstock, Illinois 60098. Phone (815) 338-3737 or 3384747. The U.S. Bureau of the Census will conduct its regular survey on employment and unem ployment in the area during the week of August 20 to 25, ac cording to Stanley D. Moore, director of the Bureau's Regional Office in Chicago. The survey is conducted for the U.S. Department of Labor in a scientifically-designed sample of approximately 71,000 households throughout the United States. Employment and unemployment statistics based on results of the survey are used to provide a continuing measure of the economic health of the nation. For example, in June 1984 the survey indicated that of the 113.9 million men and women in the civilian labor force, 106.7 million were employed. The nation's unemployment rate dropped to 7.1 percent. Information supplied by in dividuals participating in the survey is kept strictly con fidential by law and the results are used only to compile statistical totals. i POOLS N STUFF EVERYTHING Y O U NEED POOLS-SPAS-SAUNAS U.P.S.&D.H.L.
