Boxing card draws interest Plaindealer News Service WOODSTOCK--A small, but enthusiastic, crowd of around 150 showed that boxing is not a forgotten sport in McHenry County as the Woodstock Boxing Club sponsored a seven-bout card of young, hard-hitting boxers at the McHenry County Fairgrounds. The event was sanctioned by the Illinois State Athletic Commission. "We've talked to a lot of people and we understand that a lot of people simply didn't know about it," said Ed Carey, co- promoter of the fight. "We had all sorts of media mentions in the three weeks prior to the fight and people still say they didn't hear about it. I thought the people who did attend were ve: 1 with the loss, never landed more than three punches in a row as Ibriham-Hassan dominated from start to finish in the 174-pound bout. Match three looked more like a wrestling match than boxing as Milwaukee's Eddie Vega and Chicago's Curtis "Cannonball" Sims pushed and shoved each other around the ring and through the ropes. Sims had a shoulder injury recur during one of the shoving matches and had to pull out of the match. Vega was awarded a TKO victory at 2:57. Jeff "The Fighting Mexican" Silva, Sterling, HI., dropped Tony Alaniz, Oshkosh, Wis., with 1:03 to go in the first round and continued hammering Alaniz until the referee stopped people wno aid attend were very UMU UK ICICICC responsive and werj^ thrilleu fight at 1:28 of the second with what they saw." round. Silva's TKO win lm- The most action-packed bout proved his record to M) at 127 pounds while Alaniz evened to 1- 1. Match five saw Ishmael Gonzales literally knock the pants off Victor Perez in a 147- pound match. After an action- less first round, Gonzales knocked Perez down (and his mouthpiece out) with a right hand midway through the second round and later floored Perez with a punch to the stomach late in the round.' Billy Moreno, 19-6-2, knocked out Walter Cowan, Chicago, in the fourth round of their scheduled six-round fight in a 133-pound match. ' When asked if boxing would return to Woodstock, Carey mid, "discussions in the next couple of weeks to see whether it will return for sure." Taking a break from post season playoff competition, the McHenry Men's 12" League played a pair of All-Star contests Sunday, with the Eastern and Western division splitting the doubleheader. In game one, the West cap tured a see-saw battle, 14-12. The East took a 3-0 lead in the second, thanks to an RBI triple by Fred Stocker of the West End Pub, and an RBI single by Mark Vogt of Fox Hole Tap. The West countered with six runs in the bottom of the frame, the big blows coming from Ray Thelen and John Walkington, both of the Rusty Nail Inn, with two-run hits. In the top of the third, Jack's Snack Shop-McHenry Oil rightfielder Bob Michels crushed a three-run homer into the wind, and Bill Meyers of Fox Hole Tap followed with one to left field, and the East grabbed a 7-6 lead. The West took an 11-7 lead in the fourth on a two-run, inside- the-park homer by Johnsburg Businessmen's Matt Oik. A TWO--RUN SINGLE by Rick Neiss of Brake Parts tied the game at 11 in the fifth, and the East took a one-run lead in the top of the sixth, as Pete Blackburn of Jack's Snack Shop brought in teammate Michels with a single. ' But the West retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the stanza to account for the final margin. Phil Oeffling of Johnsburg led the inning off with a triple, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Rusty Nail Inn pitcher John Connell. Kenny Bottari of River Shannon singled, and Walkihgton's single, plus an outfield error, scored him. Larry Jones of the River Shannon scored Walkington with a groundout, and the West held on to win. IN GAME TWO, the East rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the third. After the West took a 7-4 lead in the sixth, the East scored eight in the bottom of the inning, taking a 12-7 lead they wouldn't relinquish. / In the sixth for the East, Meyers led off with a nomer. After Stocker and Vogt both singled, Jim Grabowski of Jack's walked, and Neiss brought in two with a double. Jeff Meyers of Fox Hole knocked in two a single, and Michels finished the inning off with an RBI double. Rusty Nail Inn third baseman Rick Wakitsch lashed a three- run homer in the seventh to bring the West closer, but the rally fizzled out. EACH DIVISION selected a most valuable player for the day, and for the East, it was Bill , Meyers. Meyers went 7-for-7 in the doubleheader, with two*- home runs and four RBI. He also scored four runs. Wakitsch won the honor foi; the West. The Rusty Nail player" was 5-fbr-7, with a homer, four, RBI and three runs scored. •, In between games, a home run v- derby was held, and Wakitsch corraled that title as well. Thirteen participants paid $3.. to enter the contest, and eacli supplied his own pitcher. In the,• 10-pitch event, Michels hit five;, to lead in the early going, but' Wakitsch nailed seven, to win* the honor. "I ;l l l HOW ABOUT from page 20 Games. Moore, who obviously had the upper hand in the match, was disappointed when the fight was called a draw-a decision greeted by a chorus of boos by the crowd. The most lopsided match of the day was seen in match two when Ramzi Ibriham-Hassan pummeled Eddie Bell, Waukegan, into a unanimous decision win. Hassan, who improved his record to 7-1, came out the aggressor early in the match and had Bell in trouble midway through the second period.
