„TION 2 - PAGE • - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST IS, 1M4 City's 62nd 'birthday' observed this month FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 16, 1934) McHenry has had another birthday and we are, municipally speaking, 62 years old this month. On Aug. 10,1972, when McHenry was in corporated as a village, we numbered several hundred souls-now lookit. On that day long ago, candidates for office made their stump speeches without any radio personal touch, to a handful of voters, while now more than a thousand men and women voters are numbered in our midst. At the first election held by the village, Richard Bishop was elected president and the first trustees were: J.B. Perry, J.M. McOmber, H.C. Smith, John King and F.K. Granger. In 1837 Henry McLean built the first house in the place which was to become McHenry near the present site of the Riverside Hotel. TWICE TOLD TALES Edited from our files of years gone by the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when all united in commemorating the parish golden jubilee. His Excellency, the Most Rev. John J. Boylan, D.D. Bishop of Rockford, presided at the solemn mass of thanksgiving celebrated at 11 a.m. with Rev. Clarence Thennes, now assistant pastor Of St. Patrick's parish, St. Charles, preaching the jubilee sermon. This week, the parents of Ensign Thomas Garner, 24, received a letter from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, saying that their son had been declared dead. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner reside on the old Sayler farm west of McHenry. Ensign Gardner had been declared missing July 16, 1943 when the U.S.S. Maddox was bombed and sunk while screening a transport area off the southern coast of Sicily. Matt M. Blake and Julie Justen of McHenry were selected by the board of supervisors Tuesday to serve as grand jurors. Vera Purvey was chosen to serve as supplemental grand juror. The Colony theatre featured Betty Grable in "Pin-up Girl", Bonnie Baker, Billy Gilbert and Frank Fay in "Spotlight Scandals" and Robert Taylor in "Song of Russia." TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 13, 1959) For the second time in a very few years, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hogan of Ringwood has been proclaimed 4-H queen of McHenry county. The 1969 honor went to Miss Pat Hogan, 15, last Friday evening when she was crowned by last year's queen, Ann Marlowe of Huntley. Pat's sister Charlotte, was named the first 4-H queen and another sister, Mary Linn was selected dairy princess in 1956. Headed by "Chuck" Miller, county central committee chairman of the Republican party, a delegation of Republicans was the successful bidder for McHenry county's outstanding 4-H steer at the auction held during the McHenry County Junior Fair. It will be served at the annual steer roast on Sunday, Sept. 20, sponsored by the Republican Central Committee. The steer weighed 1,185 pounds. In Earl Walsh's column, he commented "Suppose you men have noticed that the style- makers are bringing back vests with suits. Some years back a man wouldn't be considered dressed for going out courtin' and the like unless he wore a vest. Of course, a vest was almost a necessity when we lugged those big watch chains across our fronts." TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 14, 1974) Voters will express them selves Aug. 20 on the proposition of increasing the annual tax rate for educational purposes at McHenry County College from the present .07 percent to .17 percent. The appointment of James C. Lyons as associate ad ministrator of McHenry Hospital has been announced by Anthony Corcoran, executive director of the hospital. "Mr. Lyons will take the full ad ministrative responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the hospital, leaving the director free to concentrate on the many phases of planning necessary to the imminent construction of the Northern Illinois Medical Center, Corcoran announced. Ten communities participated with a total of 365 workers to raise funds in a Tag Day for the Women's auxiliary of the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic for McHenry County. Barbara , Miller, McHenry served as county tag day chairman with Carol Johnson chairing the McHenry community fundraiser and Jean Decker of Wonder Lake in charge of the Wonder Lake event. Larry Fry returned from his American Field Service school year in the Netherlands. He expressed enthusiasm about his experience and the values of the program. He returned with a fluency in the Dutch language and wondering if people in this country truly understand how fortunate they are. flmWEHSflRV SfU-E APPLE Ho REG.'12M SALE $1095* Apple lie -12IK • BUILT IN DRIVE •I INTERFACE CARDS -5 DISK TUTORIAL 252= - i » 1 3M SINGLE SIDED DOUBLE DENSITY DISKS REG. *32" SALE S2447 •VERBATIM SINGLE SIDED DOUBLE DENSITY DISKS REG. *24.95 SALE *17M -2S0SH 8'/} X11 COMPUTER PAPER # K 4 M 1 * 9 9 SALE $2M •RIBBONS FOR APPLE OR CITOH DMP PRINTERS REG,40.00 SALE S7M (FOR LIMITED TIMC ONLY) MACINTOSH SYSTEMS STARTING AT *1895°° •2ND DISK DRIVE BY PACE REG.
