WASTE TEST SITE continued from page 1 lease fees and percentage participations or $180,000 per annum, whichever is larger. -A minimum fee of $15,000 to the city for participation in the demonstration if the first Lanfilgas recycling facility is located someplace other than McHenry, due to the fault of GAS, Inc. GAS, Inc., has also agreed to provide $12,000 for permanent site improvements, like fencing, electricity, water service, roadway, etc. Health federation slates speaker Members of the public are invited to attend the first formal meeting of a new Illinois- Wisconsin Chapter of the National Health Federation. The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, August 16 at Harbor Ridge Country Club, on Route 59 near Grass Lake Road, two miles south of An- tioch. Guest speaker will be Charlotte Gerson Straus, who will speak on "Gerson Therapy", which was developed by her father, Maz Gerson, M.D. She'll tell how the therapy helped thousands of patients deal with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and other "incurable" chronic degenerative diseases. Besides the guest speaker, there will be exhibits at the meeting suggesting alternative treatments for certain diseases. *^^*iicket prices are $2.50 in advance or $3 at the door. For more information call 344- 3998. If the test site is located in McHenry, the project will be watched by a number of in terested governments. The proposal calls for 10 to 15 sub- sponsors, which are govern ments that have indicated an interest in the project. Some of these include Egypt; Jamaica; the Bahamas; Milwaukee, Wis; Richmond, Va.; St. Louis, Mo.; and Mon tgomery County, Md. The project basically involves filling a "cell" with municipal solid waste, sludge from the sewage treatment facility and septage from septic tanks. The cell would be constructed of the same liner material used at modern landfill operations. Once filled, the cell would be covered and sealed. The key to the system's rapid decomposition of solid waste is the introduction of the sludge and --^ntnae. These materials speed up the liquifying of organic compounds in the refuse and leach them out of the refuse cell. The leachate is then pumped to one of two digesters outside the cell. In the first digester, bacteria converts the leachate to acid. In the second, another bacteria aids in the production of methane gas, which can be converted to electricity. GAS, Inc., executives are expected to appear before the council with a draft agreement to cosponsor the test site in the near future.
