RTf. 120 • McHENRY, II WATER SAFARI... COOL FUN FOR HOT SUMMER DAYS Twenty years ago Robert MacNeal, the far-reaching owner of a Chicago crane rental company, purchased the property on Wooster Lake in Ingleside to start a small boat rental business and picnic grove. Now thousands of visitors each week spend . fun-filled days at the sprawling 140-acre family-run resort. Little by little the dream of a well- rounded family recreational area was expanded upon. MacNeal added more picnic groves, parking facilities, a miniature golf course, bumper boats, three indoor balloon- topped tennis courts, refreshment stands, and Big Mac which is a ride to the top of a ski hill, the highest spot in Lake County. Another piece of the dream was added with the luxurious Apple Tree Restaurant, 44,000 square feet which also houses a popular dinner-theater, the Apple Tree Lounge featuring live entertain ment on Friday & Saturday nights and the Green Apple Gift Shop where diners can browse through a tasteful array of of unique gifts and ac cessories. Beautiful Holiday Park is now one of the few recreational areas that provide a family playground four seasons of the year. Winter sports enthusiasts will enjoy skiing Holiday Park where those who are just begin ning or wish to increase their skills can take instruction from certified teachers in downhill and cross coun try skiing as well as ski ballet and racing. Fishing is a main attraction in the spring and fall. Swimming, picnicking and tanning on the 3000 feet of beach have been the highlights of the summer activities. MacNeal's latest creation, which has been on the drawing board since 1981, is the Water Safari, the first water ride park in Lake County. Adults and children alike have a hard time resisting the slippery 3plashy chutes that tumble them into the cool catch basin at the bottom. Until recently, water slide enthusiasts had to drive to the Wisconsin Dells to find a water park, but this summer one opened in Rockford and another began operation near Madison, Wise. George Watson, MacNeal's brother-in-law, has big plans for ex- spansion of the Water Safari. After waterfalls and landscaping, he plans to add a small pool for toddlers and to turn a shallow 3-acre lake in the picnic area into a rampaging wave pool-a mainstay of many water parks which is increasing in popularity every summer. "They'll be able to run small waves one way and long ones the other," Watson said. "If we put it in, it will be the largest of its kind in the world. At least that's what they tell me." Holiday park is a low-cost alter native to amusement pari& for a frolicking day in the sun. The cost to enter the park grounds is *3 per per son and an additional *4 for all day use of the water slides. Bumper boats rent out at *2 a ride, miniature golf is *1, and canoes, pedalboats and rowboats rent for *6 an hour or *4 a half-hour. Season passes for the park and the water slides are available for *25. Watson believes the prices to be very competitive compared to nearby amusement, theme and water parks. Holiday Park is located '/2 m'^e east of Rte. 12 on Rte. 134 in Ingleside in the heart of the Illinois Chain of Lakes area. For summer en tertainment they seem to have a little something for everyone.
