/ SECTION 2 - PAGE M - PLAIN DEALER • FRIDAY, AUGUST 17,1«M i- MOLLY MILLIGAN Your Home Decorator © 1994 Palsy Milligan Syndicate TASTER'S CHOICE Higher marriage license fees go into effect August 27 Dear Molly Milligan: This fall I plan to redo the entire downstairs of our home--living room, dining room, family room, powder room--everything but the kitchen sink. Give me one good reason why I need the services of a designer/decorator. Incidentally, I'm told by my friends that I have superb taste! Nell, St. Louis, MO Dear Nell: You may not feel the need for the services of a professional, but many people do. One consults a designer/decorator because one wants to have a guiding light when tackling a job that is so close to one's heart. These pros are trained to see what you cannot see. A decorator knows which materials are durable and easy-care as well as how to group furniture for natural traffic patterns. Designers/decorators have ready access to furniture showrooms, custom cabinetmakers and other artisans who work only "for the trade". If you want style, Nell, go with the pros. If you're just interested in good taste, go it alone. In any event, "De gustibus non est disputandum". Dear Molly Milligan: We are newlyweds and our furniture is nothing more than an accumulation of family discards and some garage sale finds. I do not know how to do upholstering but 1 can handle a paint brush and sewing machine fairly well. Help me pull this act together with the least amount of expense. Eileen, St. Louis Dear Eileen: Since your furniture is a collection of odds and ends, you can pull it together best with fresh paint and colorful slipcovers. First, go to your public library and check out a book on how to make slipcovers. There are several easy styles that require very little sewing. Select fabric that is durable, washable and not too heavy. For example: A navy and white country print in a cotton/po ly blend would be clean and crisp looking. Next, paint all wood furniture white. Accent this look with some white straw baskets filled with dried flowers. Frame two or three art posters and hang them on your walls. Add a few brightly col ored toss pillows, and voila! you've turned your second hand furniture into a really first-class act. Defr Molly Milligan: I am a widow op a limited budget. I have a very old but very comfortable chaise lounge in my bedroom, and this is where I enjoy my morning coffee and newspaper. Structurally this chair Is in pretty good condition but (like me) the upholstery is faded and frayed. I've had several estimates to have it reupholstered, but for what it will cost I can buy a brand new chaise. Is it worth it to have it recovered or should I just treat myself to a new chair? Med, Greenville, IL Dear Med: Since your chaise lounge seems to be structurally sound, and you two fit together so comfortably, it should be worth the cost to have it reupholstered. Or you might want to have it slipcovered. Slipcovers are considerably less expensive than upholstery and if you select the right kind of fabric (a cotton/poly blend) they are washable. You can even have a bedspread or draperies made to match for a fresh, total look. If you have a question for Your Home Decorator, send it along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Molly Milligan, P.O. Box 14, Dundee, IL 60118. Allow four weeks for a reply. Couples planning to marry in the near future could save money by obtaining their marriage license before Aug. 27 when the fee will be hiked. Governor James Thompson has signed an new bill which increases the marriage license fee by $15, from $25 to $40. McHenry County Clerk Rosemary Azzaro, who issues marriage licenses in the county, said the licenses are effective for 60 days from the date of issuance, so couples planning a wedding before the end of Oc tober and wanting to save paying the increase can obtain a license at the lower fee prior to Aug. 27. clerk's to collect the $40 fee, of which $25 is returned to the state to fund the battered spouse program. Currently $10 of the fee is returned to the state. The Domestic Violence Shelter and Service Fund will benefit considerably from the license hike. The projected number of licenses for 1965, based on the current per year House Bill 2376 requires Education series planned for persons with cancer average of 107,000, would bring in an additional $1.6 million. The General Assembly defeated a measure to tack the domestic violence funding on recent divorce legislation and the governor reportedly gave strong support to the new marriage license increase, over the objection of many county clerics, Azzaro said.
