The Jets will be looking to bounce back from a dismal 1983 season, led by QB Ken O'Brien. NEW SETUP -- All you college fans who believe a TV football game isn't official unless broadcast on ABC by Keith Jackson (the network's "voice of college football") can rest easy Despite federal Judge Juan Burciaya's ruling, lat er upheld in the Supreme Court, that the NCAA's control of college football telecasts was a restraint of trade and that ABC's deal with the NCAA was illegal, ABC and Jackson will be back in the booth describing the action again this fall As a result of the ruling, colleges are free to make their own TV deals ABC recently signed an agree ment with the College Football Association, which represents most of the nation's football powers As a result, the network will televise 20 games this fall The CFA's membership includes five of seven major conferences: The Big Eight. Southwest, Southeastern, Atlantic Coast Conference and the Western Athletic, plus such major independents as Notre Dame. Penn State, Pittsburgh, Boston College. Miami (Fla.) and Florida State. Under the new setup, from Sept. 8 to Dec. 1. ABC will televise CFA games from 3:30 p.m »o 7:00 p.m. CBS has a deal with The Big Ten and the Pac Ten Conferences to televise 14 games in the same time period. From noon to 3:30 p.m., local stations can carry games sold to them by individual schools and conferences. There seems to be one stipulation, however According to the contract with the CFA, there can be no "crossover" games between the CFA schools and the Pac Ten-Big Ten aruup But Jim Spence, ABC vice president in charge of sports, says his network has the right to negotiate for such games, including those of Notre Dame and use. ©Compulog SATURDAY.
