For moms, that means it will soon be time for sack lunches. To help moms pack nutritious lunches, a hospital dietitian offers a few tips: ...Plan meals to include the following four food groups- fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy and grain. ...The recommended daily calorie allowances for children ages six to 12 is approximately 2,400 calories and the need for nutrients is high during growth. ..It's important for children to begin to form sound eating habits. Nutrient dense foods like low fat dairy products, whole grain breads and cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables should be emphasized. Calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods such as candy or chips and foods high in sodium or salt should be in cluded in moderation. ...For sandwiches, whole grain is the best choice; the best source of calcium is milk. ...There are even desserts with improved nutrient density, such as recipes calling for wholesome ingredients like whole grains, fruits, nuts, etc. ...Sugar and fat are low in nutritional value and high in calories. Look for ways to reduce sugar, fat and sodium. Examples are homemade wholesome cookies or cakes versus packaged cookies or candy, fresh fruit, vegetables with peanut butter, cottage cheese or yogurt, low fat yogurt with fruit, or cheese or peanut butter with whole grain bread or crackers.
