The family of Nellie Gratton of Richmond invites her friends and relatives to an open house in commemoration of her 6ne- hundredth birthday. The festivities will be held at the Richmond Community Church from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26. Nellie Sayles was born Aug. 24,1884, to Eliza and Washington Sayles, in Richmond township. The oldest of four children, two brothers Frank and Orrie, and a sister Mabel, she attended Rich mond schools. On Aug. 19, 1903, she became the wife of Gustin Gratton. They have two daughters, Dorothy Morrison of Richmond and Violet Haack of McHenry, six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and nine great- great-grandchildren. NELLIE GRATTON Many years of their married In 1946 the Grattons retailed to Richmond to live with her sister Mabel and brother Orrie, on the old homestead. After enjoying 63 years of marriage, Mr. Gratton passed away in 1967. The centenarian is happiest when she works in her garden and loves to bake and cook for her family, which she has made a tradition for whoever can make it on a Sunday night. In very good health herself, she takes care of her 85-year- old, ailing brother; does her own shopping and banking, corresponds with relatives every week; telephones daily to make sure everyone is all right, life were spent oĵ farm near and firmly believes that God is Greenwood. ** watching over her. Nutritionist finds food substitute pills dull, unexciting and very expensive PATRICIA COLEMAN AND JAMES MYERS Plan June wedding Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coleman of Wonder Lake announce the engagement of their daughter Patricia, to James A. Myers, son of Lacy O. Myers of Fayetteville, N.C. and Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Myers, Kill Devil Hills, N.C. The bride elect is a 1979 graduate of Marian Central Catholic High School, Woodstock. Her fiance graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1972. The couple is planning a Jane 8, 1985 wedding. For years your nutritionist and your mother have been telling you to eat your vegetables. In fact, you probably couldn't get your dessert unless you did. Some time ago, the National Academy of Science came out with a paper that said certain cruciferous vegetables might prevent cancer. t These vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussels sprouts; and carotene- rich vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes,, and winter squash, were said to contain cancer fighting vitamins and the trace element selenium Industry is quick to take advantage of this situation. Now you can buy pills containing dehydrated vegetables that are touted as eating your daily amount of greens or vegetables. I've seen a lot of gimmicks in nutrition over the years, but popping these "vegetable pills'* does seem a bit silly. • • Since when does it take so much time to peel carrots, wash greens, steam and eat them, that we have to come down to taking a pill. The sad thing about this pill is that you really don't get the nutritional equivalent of the vegetables it represents. In one pill, you get only one-half of a brussels sprout, one-tenth of a cup of cauliflower or cabbage, and one-tenth of a medium stalk of broccoli. I called several stores in my area, and the cost of the pills ranged from $12.99 to $15 for 60 pills. You can buy an awful lot of vegetables for $15. If this is the coming thing, will the next thing then be a plate of pills? Can you visualize coming to dinner and having a pink pill for meat, a green pill for vegetables, a brown pill for bread, a white pill for milk, and maybe an orange pill for fruit? And it's really a travesty to teach children that pill popping is better than eating the real thing. Also, what about en joyment? We enjoy eating, and I personally love the various colors, textures, and tastes that vegetables provide to any meal. If the ads for these pills do one thing, they do point out that you need vegetables. This time of year with all the good home grown vegetables abounding in the gardens and at fruit and vegetables stands, there is absolutely no way that I would simply take a pill. How unex citing, dull and very expensive. U.M.W. Mission Team sets meeting tommiinity calendar The U.M.W.
