Area schools receive first gas tax allotment SECTION 2 - PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALEE - FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, life ̂ FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 23, 1934) Mrs. tithei Coe, county superintendent of schools, has received the first allotment of the gas-tax fund for relief of schools, made possible by a recent special session of the state legislature assigning one- third of the state gas tax fund for school relief. The first amount totalled $3,144.45 for elementary schools and $1,541.82 for the high school districts and is the first of eight checks to be received for that purpose. Hie first Republican rally of the fall campaign will be held in Woodstock Sept. 6 with C. Wayland Brooks and Milton E. Jones, candidates for Congressman-at-large ap­ pearing. The Empire Theatre on Green Street featured Shirley Temple in "Baby Take a Bow" with James Dunn and Claire Trevor. The Chicago Northwestern Railway advertised "Labor Day at Chicago World's Fair", round trip from McHenry $1.15 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 20, 1959) An ordinance was passed and approved at the McHenry City Council meeting Monday night requiring all future subdivisions to utilize public water and sewer facilities. An active and growing Veterans of Foreign Wars organization took action on further expansion at their meeting Monday evening. The membership approved building an addition to the south end of the clubhouse at a cost of $40,000 to $45,000. Elmer Miller is commander of the V.F.W. Delivery of the new "dialized" telephone directories in McHenry began today ac­ cording to Robert C. Zahn, manager here for Illinois Bell. Listings for the McHenry County area to be included are Woodstock, Crystal Lake, Harvard, Union and Marengo. Because of the new dial telephone system, the city will no longer enjoy the benefits of police signals through the telephone office. Radio operators will be hired to receive and relay messages in city hall. One shift will be handled through the radio in­ stalled in the residence of the chief of police. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 23, 1974) A joint petition filed by McHenry Hospital and Mid- States Development for an­ nexation of 175 acres of land south of the city was approved by councilmen at Monday night's meeting. Following an executive session of the board of High School District 156, a teacher contract was agreed upon resulting in a 10.3 percent salary increase plus some miscellaneous fringe benefit- s. By a decisive vote of 4,400 to 558, about 8-1, voters issued a loud "no" to spending more money for educational purposes at McHenry County College. Voting was heaviest in Wood­ stock where 848 cast negative votes and 116 were in favor. In McHenry an unofficial 696 against the referendum to 52 for was registered. The referen­ dum asked for a raise from .07 percent to .17 percent annually for educational purposes at the college. McHenry County Women's Fast Pitch 12" Softball Championship this year was won by the McHenry team. Members include MaryElleii King, Betsy Stephenson, Taina Olsen, Eileen Connell, Sharon Lively, Denise Hughes, Reggie Luckenheimer and Linda Lossman. Also Debbie Mahon, Chris Vogel, Kathy Rogers, Roni Bierman and Kathy Barry. Coaches are Ron Bierman and Ron Muerer. The sponsor is Dennis Conway of State Farm Insurance. I. Overton, Pvt. Richard Overton has left for Camp Carson, Colo, where he is stationed. "Dick" entered ^service on May 29,1943, and took his basic training at Camp Haan, Calif. Soon after getting back to .camp, Pvt. Overton expects to be sent overseas. Lt. Clarence Anderson, home on leave, pitched the Shamrocks to a 5 to 4 victory over John- sburg Sunday on the McHenry diamond. One of the nation's out­ standing bowlers Margaret Frank, who resides at Orchard Beach this summer, is a member of the Pabst Blue Ribbon team of the Chicago Congress Ladies Classic bowling league- a team which has bowled special exhibition matches in the midwest area.
