The library will re-open on Saturday, Sept. 1. * i Safety tests are no longer necessary for some trucks Owners of most pickup trucks and recreational vehicles will no longer have to have twice- annual safety inspections for their vehicles state Rep. Dick Klemm (R.-Crystal Lake) announced. "Governor Thompson has signed into law House Bill 2430, which eliminates the inspections for pickups, vans and other vehicles weighing 8,000 pounds or less," Klemm said. "This legislation will not entirely end the inspection program since ambulances, medi-cars, buses, school buses, commercial vehicles and large trucks will still be subject to inspections. But most pickups and vans, which are often used as family vehicles anyway, no longer need be inspected." Klemm said a 1981 study commissioned by Sec. of State Jim Edgar concluded there was little or no evidence to show a relationship between mandatory inspections and improved traffic safety. Edgar endorsed the repeal calling the inspection program "an unnecessary expense and an unproductive use of time and energy." "Illinois citizens spend $15 million annually in inspection fees," Klemm said. "It's a nuisance and a waste of time and money for truck and RV owners." There are an estimated one million second division vehicles in the state and more than 800,000 are vehicles weighing 8,000 pounds or less which will now be exempt from the tests.
