SECTION 2 - PAGE f - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 29,1984 ESDA announces class in scuba diving A scuba training course will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in McHenry. The course is sponsored by the McHenry County Fire Chiefs Dive Team Committee which manages the activities of the McHenry County MABAS Division V Dive Team. The team is composed of trained scuba divers who are volunteer members of either a fire department or the scuba division of the McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (MCESDA). The course w^ll include classroom instruction, extensive training at an indoor swimming pool, and will conclude with open water dives, including one right dive At the conclusion of the course, participants will be certified by the Professional Association of Diving In­ structors in Basic. Advanced Open Water and Search and Recovery. Divers who already hold one of the certifications riay enroll at a reduced charge. The divers, when finished, will become *»members of the \ olunteer McHenry County Dive Team according to Divemaster William Sheehan. According to Sheehan, divers are needed in all areas of McHenry County. Within the past five years, a new concept in rescuing drowning victims has emerged. After lengthy studies and extensive research, it has been found that Four local residents attend camp Several area children suf­ fering from asthma spent a week at camp this summer due to the* efforts of the American Lung Association. With a staff including doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and lung association staff persons, Camp Tapawingo, northeast of Peoria, assured the special precautions needed by the children. This marked the eighth year of the camp. Both campers and staff members came from throughout the state. Local campers in­ cluded: Audrey Bork, Spring Grove; Megan Daly, Spring Grove; Chad Hubbard, McHenry a and Christine Vincent, McHenry. TRIM TEAM Registration is now underway for the fall sessions of Good Shepherd Hospital's Trim Team. The 10-week weight reduction program, designed for persons of all ages, will begin S?pt. 10. Two sessions will be ottered: Mondays, from 6:30 p m. to 8 p.m. or Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to noon. The fee for !'i m Team is $75 per person. It will be taught by Robert N. Pearson, lieutenant of the Highland Park Fire Department, and a cer­ tified master diving instructor. He has been involved in un­ derwater rescue-recovery and cold water survival for seven years with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Safety Council. MCESDA coordinates the MABAS Division V Dive Team activities. The volunteers donate their time and purchase their own equipment. Discount considerations are available to them on purchasing equipment when they become associated with the team. Advance registration must be made before Sept. 13.
