& SECTION 2 - PAUL 11 - fLAinubALLn - nc.u^c.ou/1 a , ni/uuoi **, xi A diet can sometimes Soil, water district reps attend annual meeting be taken to extremes A New York Society woman once said, "You can never be too rich or too thin." Many people would agree with the first part of that statement, but the medical profession now knows .that it is possible to be too thin. Irrational dieting is dieting carried to extremes--a con dition commonly known as anorexia nervosa. Young women starve themselves in an attempt to meet America's "model thin" ideal. Young men dietto qualify for a lower weight class in contact sports such as boxing. The teenaged anorexic is characteristically a quiet and cooperative person, and is in tensely competitive. He or she may be a little obese. Keep in' This isn't always the case, but then something happens that causes an emotional crisis. During adolescence there is a natural increase in fatness, and if a young girl is depressed or upset, she might start a diet and then find that she can't stop it. Anorexics frequently believe that their lives are controlled by other people who make the rules they have to live by. Dieting is one means of asserting them selves. The teenager discovers that for the first time she has some control over her mind and body, for a child brought up in an atmosphere that stresses excellence, the diet may develop into an emotional fight to lead a life of her own. If the adolescent is a little overweight, the parents might even encourage dieting at first. Even if they don't encourage it, parents may not think of it as any more than a whim. Sometimes anorexia is well established before the parents realize that a dangerous health problem exists. If you believe that you child is losing too much weight, there are certain symptoms to look for. One sign of starvation is body chillng. Anorexics feel cold even when everyone else thinks it's warm. A covering of soft hair appears on the skin and menstruation stops. Ribs become prominent, and arms and legs look as if they are only skin and bone. If dieting is pushed to the extreme, the individual may experience distorted per ceptions or halluncinations. A feeling of extreme well-being or euphoria is often a byproduct of malnutrition. Anorexics usually insist that they eat a lot, but they never want to tell exactly what they do eat. Some say that they enjoy the feeling of hunger because it makes them feel good to have a flat and empty stomach. They almost always say that the emaciation is normal. Some anorexics use laxatives and diuretics as a way of producing further weight loss. These drugs, if used in excess, can fatally alter the fluid and mineral balance of the body. Sudden death, usually as a result of self-medication, occurs in an estimated two or three percent of anorexics. Sometimes anorexics become super achievers in body con ditioning. They start exercising, running or jogging. A parent might encourage this without realizing that the child is carrying it beyond healthful limits. If you have doubts as to Whether your child or someone you know is an anorexic, you can be certain they are not if the individual complains about losing weight and makes an obvious effort to prevent it. If they do not, and are too thin, take them to a physician. It is almost impossible for the family to get an anorexic to eat properly. Sometimes, the help of a dietician or family counselor also will be needed.
