Debaters fare well over summer Making it all the way to the final championship round at Augustana's National Summer Tournament was, as Jeff Gealow said, the highlight of his summer. Gealow, a senior at East and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Gealow, felt all of the hard work at the summer workshop paid off. After three weeks of in­ tensive research on this year's debate topic concerning poverty in America, Gealow and his partner, Chad Kulm, of Min­ nesota, won four preliminary rounds to advance to the finals. The tourney was held at the end of July at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., with participants from 16 states. Among his teammates, who also attended the workshop, was Todd Weiler, who advanced to the octa-final' championship round. Weiler is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Weiler and is also a senior at East Campus. Other McHenry students traveling to summer debate workshops were Paul Westphal, Ron Naus, Jenny Stumbris, Chris Bassi and Laura Dwor­ niczek. Westphal accompanied his teammates Gealow £nd Weiler to Augustana and Naus attended a workshop at Eastern Illinois University. The Marquette University debate camp was the choice of Stumbris, Dworniczek and Bassi. -- The Lions Club, Toastmasters Club and Wonder Lake Women's Club all helped to finance the students attending the various debate camps. JHS slates orientation for parents On Wednesday, Sept 5, Johnsburg High School will host a parent's orientation program in the auditorium at the school. The program will begin at 7 p.m. for parents of freshman students and at 7:45 p.m. for parents of sophomore, junior and senior students. Parents of freshman students will become acquainted with the school, faculty and programs at, Johnsburg High School. Parents of new transfer students are also urged to attend. From 8 p.m. to 9:45 jj.m., parents of all students will at­ tend a mini-school day con­ sisting of 10 minute class periods. During these sessions, teachers will present an over­ view of the courses being taught, including the nature of the course,* material to be covered, homework expectations, grading and career potential information. OPEN HOUSE All sixth grade students and their parents are invited to attend an open house at McHenry Junior High School on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to meet teachers and become familiar with the school and curriculum. The open house for seventh and eighth graders is Sept. 26. Financial planning course being offered in Johnsburg Financial independence is a goal for most everyone. To work toward that goal one needs to know about life insurance, estate planning, retirement pensions, stock markets and real estate. The Community Education Office of McHenry County College is offering a class this fall that may help determine a financial plan for the future. •& Being offered in JofcqSburg for the first time is "Financial Planning", a five-week course to be held Wednesday evenings, starting Sept. 5, at Johnsburg High School. The course in­ structor, Raul Viteri, a financial planner from Crystal Lake, will inform participants about risk management strategies, cash reserves, estate planning, in­ vestments, limited part­ nerships, income tax and reasons for financial failure. A number of business seminars never offered before by MCC are listed in the Sep­ tember-October Community Education schedule of classes, seminars and workshops. Two of them, "Marketing-The Goal is the Sale" and "learning From Others' Mistakes- Preventing Them in Your Business", will be taught by Douglas Odell of Winnetka, a retired Sears Roebuck and Oct. executive. Odell is a member of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), a branch of the Small Business Ad­ ministration, the goal of which is to encourage and assist the development of small business by providing counseling in starting, financing and operating a business venture by retired business executives. Find out at a wellness seminar McHenry County College Counselor Cathy Bolger will lead on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 1 to 2:30 p^n. at the college. Wellness is a term describing a concept that goes beyond the usual definition of health ds lack of illness, to adaptation of a lifestyle allowing the individual to reach his or her highest potential for physical and psychological development. Bolger will talk about wellness in relation to stress management, physical fitness, environmental sensitivity and self-responsibility. She sees the first step to achieving a wellness lifestyle as taking responsibility for your self, acknowledging that you are the major cause of the state of your health. The seminar fee is $2. The college will be closed on Labor Day, Monclay, Sept. 3. Registrations for the wellness seminar will be accepted up to the starting time of the seminar.
