"Bette Midler -- Art or Bust," airing Sept. 4 and 7, is a sophisticated, cleverly orchestrated and illustrated hour of song and music. The perform ance is billed as a film of her concert tour last year. But the HBO production is very different from the live concert. We hear applause but we never see ah audience. We see Miss Midler enter ing from the wings, but she never speaks to her ticket holders. This is a film of a concert, but it doesn't have any sem blance of a live event. Instead. *Miss Midler seems to be performing for us. he» television audi ence. She croons to the camera, flirts with the lens, smiles into our eyes. The fact that thousands of people are sitting at her feet is totally forgotten. So is half the Uve con cert -- the conversational part. Anyone who has ever seen Miss Midler per form knows she is equally good as both a comedian and a singer. She's bawdy and raunchy and funny. telling jokes and personal stories that would make bartenders blush. She prances from one side of the stage to the other spilling out the comedy. But not here. Whatever Kkes the University of innesota heard are long gone. Aside from the lyr ics to her songs, Miss Midler does not speak one word. It's disconcerting but it's interesting. Alongside the songs are animated sequences, beautiful illus trations and unusual pho tographic techniques that keep the viewer riveted to the screen. There's not a single Sophie Tucker joke in the whole show, but it's a great hour regardless. MEN AND MUSIC -- Look for more music on Nickelodeon as Men at Work headline the "Satur day Concert," airing Sept. 8. The top Australian band performs in a live concert in Toronto, Ontar io, singing such songs as "Who Can It Be Now" and "Down Under." The following Saturday, on Sept. 15. Nickelodeon premieres live concert footage of the Outlaws, taped in Philadelphia. The rock 'n' roll band sings "Ghost Riders." "There Goes Another Love Song" and "Green Grass and High Tides." among others. ©IMS Comprise
