(PG- 13-MGM/UA) Starring Patrick Swayie. C Thomas Howell and Lea Thompson * By Way no Millar II is, without a doubt, the finest fantasy film ever made. Whether you've seen "The Wizard of Oz" two or 10 times, whether you're young or old, the film never fails to stir up the magical wonder in all of us. Who hasn't wished -- even once -- that they could sail over the rainbow and skip down the Yellow Brick ad? Or greet the pint-sired singing munch- kinst And who hasn't hissed at the Wicked Witch and cheered on the lovely Good Witch Glinda? Based on Frank Baum's classic novel, the 1939 MCM film tells the story of Dorothy, a lonely girl from Kansas who, in a dream, travels to the Land of Oz. There, she meets up with an unlikely trio: a brainless scarecrow, a heartless tinman and a courage- less lion. The four, travel onto Emerald City to meet the only man they are told can fulfill their desires: The great and powerful Wizard of Oz. But Dorothy unmasks the Wizard as a hoax. Or is he? He may not grant wishes or guarantee happiness, but he does help the quartet (and audiences) realize that happi ness (and intelligence, love and courage) come from within. It takes 101 glorious minutes for Dorothy to conclude "there's no place like home. " Judy Garland's portrayal of Dorothy has become part of film history, as have the performances of Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow), lack Haley (the Tinman) and Bert Lahr (the Cowardly Lion). j Question: What was Dorothy's last nam? £ 1984 Compu'og ByJ.T. The stadium scoreboard ol the local high school In a town somewhere in Colorado flashes the score of last weekend's football game The score shows that the home team has lost to the visitors, a seemingly rare event The allusion here by director and screenwriter John MiHus borrows the football metaphor from "M'A'S'H" (and a few other films) to symbolize war Just as this local town in the USA had never lost a footoaii contest until Ihetr last game. America had never lost a war until Vietnam And if the United States could not win a conven tional war in Vietnam, perhaps they would also lose a conven tional war on their own home ground. This idea sets the stage for invasion of the United States by Russia Even if you think the idea of a Russian invasion is ludicrous, it's a great premise lor a movie I don't know whether "Red Dawn" will change your political viewpoint, but it wiH provoke discussion and debate Any film that begins with Russian and Cuban troops parachuting into a schoolyard is taking chances from tfe YURKO outset, but Milius steals your attention by concentrating on the action The story centers on a group of high school kids who escape the evasion by taking to the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains There they become survivalists, learning to hunt and stay alive Milius spends little time trying to explain how the war began One must remember that he is the man who wrote the famous Robert Ouvall speech^ in "Apocalypse Now" that began "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning " Almost in spite ol the film's somewhat stereotyped charac ters. contrived scenes, and overall lackluster direction it does have an inherent power; a disquieting, unnerving effect drawn from showing us p js sian flags flying over a cof ee shop and local citizens interned in a drive-in movie now converted to a barbec wire "re-education" camp "Red Dawn" wiH not turn a pacifist into a militarist, but i has enough disturbing effect to make you appreciate the sim ple pleasure of a normal middle-America high school tootbaH gan >tbaii game. ---
