He's turned his baseball broadcast partner, Tony Kubek, onto rock 'n' roll guitarist George Thoro- good. His verbal skills were honed in that cold cradle of broadcasters and running backs, Syracuse University. Welcome into your Sunday afternoons the new host of NBC's "NFL '84": Bob Costas. Costas will preside over the proud peacock's pre-, post- and halftime festivi ties with wit. candor, spunk and a healthy sense of sports perspective. "The style and presence of those participating can , be appreciated on a level beyond who won the game," says Costas. "If your enjoyment of sports is limited to those moments when your team wins, I think you're missing the point." « This from the man who will be responsible for dis seminating the scores of all the NFL games to all the viewers all across the land. NBC's former NFL host, Bryant Gumbei, was leg endary for his prowess in multiple television scann ing. synthesis of the perti nent and effortless packag ing of Information into 20 second nuggets for home consumption. Can Costas accomplish the task with the same bemused and precocious appreciation he's displayed during his years in the broadcasting booth? "In the studio, even just reading scores conveys your personality and ener gy. But there are limita tions While I'm narrating a highlight which occurred on artificial -turf,--H-canH--com-- ment that I prefer games to be played on grass when I've got 45 seconds to pass along every score in the league. "With play-by-play, you can weave your comments through tlie lulls between tackles. I'll miss that. And during any especially har rowing days in the studio, I might yearn for the relative simplicity of play-by-play, and tfjjjrcomfort of being in the booth with Bob Trumpy (Costas's football partner since 1981) There are other changes on "NFL *84-" -- and they aren't cosmetic. There will be weekly segments com memorating the AFL's 25th anniversary. Pete Axthelm, Bob Macatee and Ahmad Rashad remain; Len Ber- man and Dave Marash do not. The show's tone and the rigor of debate between contributing analysts is now to be determined by Costas -- who's got his own notions of what tubesports can provide. "The basic health benefit accrued by watching an afternoon of football is to be properly inspired by such heroic endeavors and to embark upon a training regimen of your own on Monday morning."
