K*> 4 H1.ANIW MJ KM.XA III. S I'IIMIH K 7/v V l'»M Exciting races on tap in Fox Valley, NWSC 11 you're an area football fan, you're in for a real treat this season. With the McHenry Warriors battling in the Fox Valley, and Marian Central and Johnsburg in the Northwest Suburban, the competition should be in teresting and exciting. According to the FVC coaches, the race for the con ference title should be in triguing, with four teams having a good chance to win the title. W O O D S T O C K , T H E DEFENDING FVC ANDiClass 4A champions, has to be again considered as a pre-season favorite for the crown. Coach Bob Bradshaw should defensive secondary. Coach Bradshaw said he's looking for a strong FVC race. "The Fox Valley should be a real good league this season. Plus we have three tough non- conference games to contend with, namely Waukegan West, Riverside-Brookfield and Chicago Schurz," he said. Bradshaw added the winning of the state championship last year has made the team work harder in 1984, and he said he's pleased with the progress of the team thus far. He picks Crystal Lake South, Crystal Lake Central, McHenry On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt gain his 100th career win at sometime during this season. His 15-year coaching record stands at 94-42-1. Hie Blue Streaks have a couple of outstanding backs this season. Carnell Washington, a 6'3", 260 lb. fullback, who runs the 40 in 4.9, will also play defensive tackle. He will team with Warren Wolschlager in the backfield. As a junior, he ran for over 800 yards in a pass-oriented offense. The present seniors were 9-0 as sophomores, while the juniors were 8-1 last season. THE REAL PROBLEM FOR THE STREAKS and for Bradshaw will be trying to replace son Greg, who is now playing football for Nor thwestern University. Jim Judson and Timm Fields, a junior, are in the fight for the signal-calling post. v . . The Streaks will have aJ Kardys and Mickey Carnes, who veteran offensive line returning, .will do double duty as a wide but will be questionable in the receiver. in the line, the Gators have Dean Barchard (6'3" 218), along with John Broadhead (6'3" 225) and center Art Ferraro (6'2" 210). "We have a pretty good squad," Hight said. "Not a lot of depth, but the hardest working group of young men in the history of the school. He, like Bradshaw, picks Central, Woodstock, McHenry and South to vie for the title. TALKING WITH BILL MACK OF Crystal Lake Central is not only a pleasure, but quite an experience. Hie most successful coach in the Fox Valley, and probably the most genial too. Mack noted the Tigers have the conference's leading scorer returning in Jared Sasser, at 6'1" and 210 lbs. Sasser ran for 15 touchdowns last year, and is being looked at by a number a big-time colleges, including several in the Big 10. Along with Sasser, other returners are linebacker Bryan Hansen, end Mark Stafter, guard George Markus, Brian Roher, a fine punter, and placekicker Tod Dodds. Mack thinks he has a solid team, but no speed at the skill positions. He does, however, always seem to come up with a placekicker, and if you look back in past records, he has won a lot of games by the margin of a field goal or extra point. Never count a Bill Mack- coached team out of any league. "The winner of the conference will have a hard time going undefeated in the league," he said. He again picks South and the Warriors, and adds his Central team and Woodstock will beHJiere fighting for the crown. BOB CARLSON OF DUN- DEE-CROWN lost many seniors, and thus has an inex and his Blue Streaks to battle it out for the title. THE GATORS OF CRYSTAL LAKE SOUTH and coach Bob Hight are picked as the favorites this year, according to tte Chicago newspapers. Caocm Hight said he really can't un derstand why they have been tabbed as such. He does, however, have one of the top players in the Chicago area in Paul Prentice, a fine defensive back and quar terback. Prentice can call upon tailback Greg Schulz, a 6'0", 180 lb. speedster/He's probably the fastest player in the conference, and last season returned three kickoffs for TD's. Hie Gators should also have one of the best defensive secondaries in the entire area. Joining Prentice are Chris perienced squad, although he has a big turnout, 53 in all. With a potentially excellent throwing quarterback in Terry Sitowski, a change from Geo Scott's (a likable coach) running game of the past will likely be in order. They should fill the airways, as Sitowski has two fine receivers to toss the ball to, Brad Williams and Joe Daugherty. Carlson, like most coaches, claims his squad has been working hard. In fact, they had three-a-day workouts until this week when school began. The Chargers have one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the area, with Sterling, St. Charles and Palatine all on tap. A typical coach, Carlson said his team could be in the fight for the title, but like most, said the four frontrunners - Woodstock, CL South, CL Central and McHenry should be near or at the top. "The QB position I will be the one {problem. . - D o n P e n z a THE JACOBS GOLDEN EAGLES only return three lettermen, but Coach Craig Hall is expecting a lot of help from last year's sophomore troop, which went 9-0 for the season. The three returners are good ones. Ken Ezop will move to tailback to make room for senior Dave Moeller, 6'1", 190 lb. hard- running fullback. Junior quarterback Pat Ar nold, who led the undefeated sophomores last season, will be the field general this year. The Eagles will find that in a con ference such as the Fox Valley, it will be tough to^ win with juniors. Coach Hall thinks he will have a team that will develop as the season progresses. He likes the Gators of South as the team to beat. T H E C A R Y - G R O V TROJANS are again faced wit a numbers problem. With than 30 out for the squad, it going to be an uphill struggle fc Mike Buck and his crew. "We are much improved fro last year; We're bigger an quicker," Buck said. The key to the Trojan attacd this season is Tom VanAllei who is moving from wid receiver to running back. Junior Kevin Collins will be a the fullback slot, returner Briai Helmer will go both ways on the line, John Rose will also se< double duty, along with Gre Phillips. According to coach Buck, the Trojans can stay healthy and field their regulars, the can be competitive. He thinks South and Central will be tlx teams to beat in the FVC. THE WARRIORS OF JOEl SCHLENDER are waiting great anticipation for th coming season. Seventeen lettermen are returning, including all- conference quarterback Craig Hill, who tossed for over 1,100 yards last year. Along with Hill in the back- field will be Pat Dunne, retur ning from an injury-plaguec junior season, and Jim Shaver, speedster and a good pass receiver. Where's the be#? At the guard position. Pat Gorniak, at 6'3" and 250 will not only be ready to open the holes for the backs, but will also be awaiting the opposition to come his way. Mike Woo, Mark Ethridge Brad Snyder and Jim Owens wil also give the Warriors some hel{ up, front. Coach Schlender is high on his squad this year. He believes his Warriors could have a say in the Fox Valley, and points to th< South game at home Sept. 21 as the key to the season. That gam< will be the conference opener foi both schools.
