MARIAN BACK ANDY HARTLIEB MARIAN "I don't know if George can. replace Chuck and I don't know if he is even trying to," Penza said. "George has developed into a fine quarterback. He will do the job well -- in his own way." THE MARAIN COACH SAID HE is confident in his offensive attack. "We feel good about knowing we can score inside the 20-yard line. Whether it's fourth- and-one or fourth-and-10, once, we're that close we know we can get points," he said. "And that's a nice feeling to have." Will returns as the team's field goal kicker and punter. His right foot made the difference in tire Hurricanes' 17-14 win over Lake Zurich in the 1983 con ference finale. "The field goal was always in the back of our mind," Penza said when asked why he didn't attempt more field goals last season. "But our offense was such that, most of the time we "I have a very smart, thinking- type team." --Don Penza didn't need to kick it." Three veterans return to Marian's offensive line and should provide a strong front for the offensive backs to do what they do best. The left tackle spot is still open and is being sought by senior Joe Sullivan (6-0, 200 pounds) and junior Mike Wozny (6-3,200.) "We're still looking at both as possible starters," Penza said. The Marian defense, which allowed an average of 11.6 points per contest last season, will see several new faces, but promises to be a tough unit to score upon. REPLACING ALL-NWSC MIDDLE linebacker: Darren Fortii/will be Hartlieb, who vrijtf the switch from defensive end to the middle in the 'Carney*-, * 3 defense. The front fodr of Van Landuyt (6-3), Truckffobrod, Green and John Powers gives Marian a strong, solid wall of defenders. MARIAN continued IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL is senior Mike Green, a 5-9,185- pound center who doubles as a defensive tackle. At right guard is senior Brian Truckenbrod (6- 1,190 pounds) and the probable right tackle is John Paul Powers (6-2, 215). "What we will be, however, is inexperienced on the left side," Penza said. "Some people want to call it our weakness, but I prefer to call in inexperience." The left guard will be Paul Slomski, a strong 5-5, 180- pounder who was a running back in 1983. "Paul moves quickly. I'm confident about his move from the backfield to the line," Penza said. HURRICANES Barry Lamb and Will offer experience at linebacker and they will be backed in the secondary by Dan Fortin, George Powers, Steve Baldwin, Kevin McConville, Mark Kammermeier and Brown. Will the strong hackfield turn Marian into a rushing-oriented team? "We'll play the g$me as dictated by the defense," Penza simply replied. HE ADDED THAT HIS AP PROACH to the game -- letting his players call all offensive or defensive signals -- will also remain unchanged. "This is by no means a knock to any coach or any other football program, but I have a very smart, thinking-type team," Penza said. "They thinf football all the time. Each coach has his own system, and this is not to degrade them, but that's the way I run my system." 'We have the backs and we have the receivers. All we them the ball. --Don Penza have to do is get Penza adniits with only 33 players on his roster, a key injury could put a monkey wrench into his season. "Our problem is a lack of real depth, but these kids have a knack for picking each other up. Whether its helping correct a blocking assignment or pass pattern or whatever, they pick each other up." The only other thing that Penza said worries him is "South. Tonight." ROCKETS... BLAST OFF! CUBBYHOLE RESTAURANT 10824 MAIN ST..
