I'l Hall needs Eagles to grow up in a hurry By Joe Kusek Plaindealer News Service A L G O N Q U I N Psychologists say that growing up is hard to do for today's teenagers. Jacobs High School football coach Craig Hall hopes that won't be the case for his Golden Eagle football team. For that is exactly what Hall needs his team to do - to grow up and grow fast, especially before the Fox Valley Con ference season starts. Because inexperience is one of the Golden Eagles' biggest problems for the 1984 season, Hall welcomed back his let- termen, despite that description fitting just three players. "THAT (INEXPERIENCE) WILL BE an awful big key for us," Hall, whose team was 4-5 last year, said. "For us, we're not just talking about our juniors growing up, we're talking about our seniors growing up. "The inexperience is probably the worst in our offensive line, our backfield is adequate. And I think that is the most crucial part of our offense. Only time will tell." • Hall's young team will get its first test Sept. 8, when it travels to Lake Zurich for its first gattne of the season. After another non- conference game - with Wauconda the following week, the Golden Eagles first FVC contest is Sept. 22 when it plays Dundee-Crown. ALONG WITH HIS OF FENSIVE LINE being young, so is Hall's offensive backfield. At the controls this year running the Golden Eagles' option of fense is speedy Pat Arnold (5-11, 165). "He has good speed," said Hall of the junior signal-caller. "We've always run the option and it helps with someone as quick as that." One mainstay in the backfield is Ken Ezop - one of Hall's three returning lettermen. Last fall, Exop (5-9, 165) did his rushing from the fullback spot. This year, he starts a step further back in the tailback position. Joining him will be junior Jay Scime (5-6,140), Dan Hochel and senior Dave Moller. Split wide will be juniors Keith Weitz and John Wright. Senior Jeff Erickson was in line for a starting job, according to Hall, but is lost for the rest of the season due to a ruptured spleen. got pretty good size," said Hall of his lineman. "But they're still a step slow and I think that's because they're not sure of what to do yet." A lot of the same faces dot Hall's defensive roster. Scime doubles as a cornerback, Ezop also plays linebacker along with Moeller and Piskule on the defensive line. "WE DON'T LIKE TO DO THAT, but we have to," lamented Hall. "Usually you have three or four, tint this year we have six or seven/And you know the injury factofk those number could increase." Two places that brighten Hall's outlook considerably are the tight end and strong safety slots, because they are manned by one person - senior Todd Suma. "He's definitely a leader," praised Hall of his 6-3,190-pound player. "He runs the show, he handles our secondary. "His strongest attribute is his moxie, his ability to know what's going on all the time. He'll do the job for us." Joining Suma on the defensive side will be Art Newsome (5-10, 170) at the other linebacker spot, while Dwayne Mead will play the corner opposite Scime. .."WHAT WE HAVE TO IS A GOOD job defensively and on our special teams," explained Hall. "We have to go for field position this year. With the inexperience it's tough to go a long way (on offense)." Hall sees the conference race almost a toss-up with Crystal Lake South, Crystal Lake Central and Woodstock con sidered the front-runners. McHenry is also a team to watch for, according to Rail. > "We're taking it one day at a time," said Hall. "It's just a matter of learning as the season goes on and how fast and well we doit." "That is where you want your seniors," he said. "If you have any experience, you want it there." Senior Tim Brown, (6-0, 175) will start at center and will be flanked by junior Frank Schneider and Mark DonahOe at the guards. Senior Marc Piskule (6-3, 190) and junior Bruce Challey handle the tackle chores. "When you look at us, we've EAT 'EM UP! • SKYHAWKS * WARRIORS • HURRICANES* ROCKETS SIUC'S PIZZA & RIBS 3401 W.
