\* Local state in seed collection program The Conservation Department will again purchase limited amounts of tree and shrub seed from the public this fall, ac cording to A1 Mickelson, Forest Resources and Natural Heritage Division chief. Collected seed will be used to grow seedlings at the state's two tree nurseries in Mason and Union counties. Seedlings produced from the seed will be used for conservation plantings on public and private lands throughout the state. Permits are required for peftons wishing to collect and sell seed, Mickelson said. Interested persons may contact any of the more than 20 Seed Collection Centers located throughout the state for in formation about the kinds of seeds being purchased, prices being paid, and procedures for obtaining permits and delivering seeds. Chain O'Lakes State Parte is the local seed collection center. Tliey will be issuing permits and accepting collected seed Mondays. For information phone (815) 785-2385. Participation in the seed collection program reached an all time high last fall, according to Mickelson. "People find that collecting nuts and other tree seed provides a healthful outdoor experience as well as a con tribution to a worthwhile con- servation effort," he said. "If their labors also result in a small amount of income for themselves, so much the bet ter." The height of the collection season occurs in early to mid- October. Interested persons should contact the Seed Collection Center nearest them.
