After a lengthy bout with producers, directors and numerous auditions, patience finally paid off, in a way, for the five-member team from Crystal Lake when they appeared Sept. 16 on the night-time version of the "Family Feud" television show. > "It was a terrific show," Suzanne Svejcar said. 'It really didn't matter if we won or lost, we were just happy to have been chosen." But in their effort to become the chosen family, the Svejcars went through a 10-month period of anxious anticipation and were faced with numerous bouts of bad luck, family problems and nerve-shattering try outs. The story began when the family - Suzanne and her husband Carl, daughter Debbi Speechley of Crystal Lake, sister Marlene Murphy of Glen view and nephew Kevin Murphy of Evanston - applied and were asked to appear along with 1,400 other Chicago area families in a standing-room-only Continental Hotel ballroom for a test show last January. "We figured that we were lucky enough just to audition, but that was all," Suzanne said. "They just wanted to ask you questions, to see if you fall apart or not, and if you were a family under consideration, they would call you back for another audition within two days." When the Svejcars came back odds to appear on 'Feud' from dinnerthe next night, they received a call from an associate producer who asked them to once again do battle witt) other families, only an a smaller scale. Their anticipation grew until the family ««Hitioned. and suffered a humiliating tnai- game defeat. The Svejcars were sent home from Chicago with heads hanging and a fear that they would not be called back by the producers in the alloted two weeks to set up a television appearance. "We knew that it didn't matter to the producers whether or not you were great players or not," Suzanne said. "They were in terested in a good, interesting family. "After two days of waiting, our daughter Debbi was checking our mailbox every day for a response," Carl said. "I used to have fun telling her that the acceptance letter was here, and thai show her an empty mailbox." But, like the boy who cried wolf, Carl trudged into the house one rainy Saturday afternoon, again boasting that they had been chosen, but no one believed die truth. The truth was verified later when the studio called to set up a taped appearance time in early March. The family was again thrown into anxiety when they had to quickly make arrangements for a trip to Hollywood in less than two weeks. The rush was worth the time though, because "Family Feud" paid for the trip, a rental car and $150 a day. Looking back on their last two months, the Svejcars could not believe the uncanny bit of luck they were blessed with. However, a twist of fate nearly ended the vacation and the family. The Saturday before their . trip, Carl was hospitalized after he could not shake a two-month cold he had been suffering from. The trip was cancelled, to the ttauiv J the femtly, and on the day the taping was scheduled, Carl suffered a heart attack. The house was gloomy - mostly from the illness, Suzanne said - but also because the plug of their television fantasy had been pulled out. "When we called the producer, he told us it was un fortunate that we had to cancel, but that the show was built around the family and that we could reschedule a taping for a new night-time show that would be coming up in late summer," Suzanne explained. "It was wonderful. They gave us a second chance." Carl's health improved, and with the good news that they again had a chance at appearing on "Family Feud", the family frantically prepared for a May 29 appearance. From the day of the flight on, the Svejcars were treated as celebrities, treated to free champagne on the flight and to rounds of applause upon their arrival. Richard Dawson, emcee of the show, who was given an Illinois Lottery Lotto ticket as a gift from the family, did not appear until minutes before the*show, Suzanne said. When he did appear, anxiety hit the family. "When we first saw him, he was behind the wings, waving and winking to us," Suzanne recalled. "He really knows how to calm you down." "I was on my heart medicine, and my throat felt like I was eating chalk," Carl said. "He would cover his mike and give both sides pep talks and give irrational answers as a joke to help us calm down. He was a lot nicer than I thought he would be." - When the game began, the Svejcar family quickly jumped to a three-game, 250-point lead. With two games remaining, they were confident of victory. But, unfortunately the Marinaci family uum Coluftibus, Ohio, won the remaining two games and beat the Svejcars. As a consolation, the family was again treated to a royal reception on the plane ride home and Suzanne said they received complimentary games from the sponsors. For weeks following the taping, the family sent out fliers to family and friends, advising them the day was coming and that a party would precede the showing. When the day finally did arrive, the showing was rescheduled to 11:30 p.m "It was a little late for a party," Suzanne said. "So we went to bed at 10 and set our alarms to get up." The Svejcar family went through many changes in the last nine months, from almost losing a family member to appearing on a Hollywood game show, but they stuck together, Suzanne said. After the show, the producers said it was possible that the family could be picked to compete again in one year. And although the family has mixed feelings about another appearance, they will never forget that, for at least one night, they were celebrities.
