PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28. ltM Dry conditions and • cool temperatures brought about an early fall this year and with it, an early harvest season. Many county producers have already begun harvesting their corn fields and others will soon follow. Producers can gear up for the harvest by making sure their combines are in proper working order. A good way to start is by reviewing the1 operator's manual. It is difficult to remember all there is to know about machinery adjustments and operating principles from one harvest season to the next. note early harvest Man Charged with disorderly conduct The (EXTENSION) People AAAml Combine deck plates should be set as wide as possible without losing any filled ears and ad justed so they are farther apart at the rear than at the front. When -adjusting concave-to- - cylinder clearances, it is best to Start with a wide clearance and slow cylinder speed. The cylinder speed may then be gradually increased and the clearances decreased until the best performance is achieved. The goal is to adjust the cylinder speed and clearance that cobs pass through with a minimum of breakage and very few kernels. The cleaning fan speed should be set as high as possible without Mowing corn out the back of the combing. This is especially important to reduce the amount of trash in the grain tank. Caution should be taken not to overload the chaffer and cleaning sieves. rs McHenrv m m Sim, 187") lairidealer McHenry Herald (USPS 335-200) Established 1875 3812 West Elm Street Phone 815-385-0170 Circulation 385-0178 McHenry, Illinois 60050 Published Every Wednesday & Friday at McHenry, Illinois Second Class Postage PAID at McHenry, Illinois by SHAW FREE PRESS v NEWSPAPER GROUP POSTMASTER Send address changes to McHenry Plaindealer 3812 W. The chain speed should be matched to the ground speed so that stalks are not pushed forward or pulled back into the combine so quickly that ears snap off and fall to the ground. In down corn or corn with weak stalks, it is best to drive slowly. The speed for minimum losses may be as slow as two miles per hour. Studies have shown that increasing the speed from 2.3 mph to 3.10 mph in creased losses by more than three bushels per acre. Spending a small amount of pre season time to review this in formation can save a great deal of time during the all too hectic harvest season. It is also important to examine combines thoroughly before harvest time rolls around, checking engine speed, belts, chains, slip clutches, snapping rolls, and other parts. Any damages or excessively worn parts should be repaired or replaced. Frequent ad justments and checking of parts during the harvesting process will also help to reduce costly repair time.
