SECTION S - PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER HERALD, WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 3,1984 It's planting time for spring flowering bulbs Spring flowering bulbs are perhaps the most popular group of flowering plants used in the home landscape. While formal bed type plantings have been the traditional manner to use these plants, natural plantings are rapidly gaining in popularity. For best. results, natural planting* of spring bulbs should easily Mend into the landscape. Mjus plantings following ridges or depressed areas, open areas around and between shrubs, wooded areas, stream or pond binks , or grassy slopes are good examples. To make plantings look natural, it is best to plant larger numbers of single species in one location rather than several different, contrasting species. ' The (EXTENSION) People AMml Spring bulbs in natural plantings should be put in at the same depth as traditional uses, but ignore spacing requirements. * Bulbs evenly spaced do not look natural, so many gardeners simply scatter the txilbs over an area and plant them as they lie. Many species will spread on their own over time to further add to the natural appearance. , Narcissi are probably the most popular spring flower for natural type plantings. Not only are these dependable and showy flowers, but they rapidly self- propogate themselves in most landscape settings. There are a wide variety of species in this family, including the daffodils. Various shades of yellow or white are typical colors, with several flower types available. Narcissi need to be planted deep (6 to 8 indies) for best results. Crocus are another very popular spring flowering bulb for natural areas. These plants are usually the first to emerge in the spring, often times while there is still'snow on the ground. Several species of crocus are available, varying in size and IINT RINSfMUAC the professional do-it-yourself carpet cleaning system First Hour of Rental Si.00 per hour for every hour thereafter, (lxemple-2 hours • total charge $1 plus tax.) White, yellow and various * shades of purple are most common. Plant crocus about three inches deep. There are several smaller spring bulbs, best for sheltered areas, that make good natural plantings. Muscari, or grape hyacinths, are commonly available in white or purple. Delicate white snowdrops, or Galanthus, are another good choice, as is the windflower, or Anemone. Rock gardens are prime locations for all of these species. Plant each about three inches deep. Tulips can also be used for naturalist plantings, although most species are probably better for use in traditional bed type plantings. 'Tulipa greigii,' T. fosteriana, ' and T Kauf- manniana' are among the species of tulips good for natural areas. October is the ideal time for planting all spring flowering bulbs. Regardless of the natural setting chosen, well-drained soil is needed by all species. These types of plants will suffer when placed in heavy clay, com pacted, or poorly drained sites. Another important factor in choosing a location is spring and early summer activities in the area. The leaves of all spfing bulbs need to be left on until they wither and brown, which may be several weeks after flowering, to assure flowers the following year. Thus areas that need to be mowed should be avoided or the grass needs to be left uncut until these leaves wither, which may be undesirable.
